Y Helps Local Teenagers Get Ready For Summer Jobs

The Community YMCA is offering courses in Lifeguarding and Safety Training to help prepare area teenagers for this summer’s challenging job market. The courses will provide them with the skills needed to be a lifeguard at pools, private camps or beach clubs. These jobs not only help to keep local residents and vacationers safe, but they are highly sought after year round and can be among the best paid jobs in the area for teens. The courses teach teens how to administer first aid, CPR to adults and children/infants, and lifeguarding among other skills. Courses are American Red Cross certified.

A lifeguard and instructor at the Y’s Family Health & Wellness Center in Red Bank, Evan Marx, 16 of Lincroft, started as a swim instructor aid for the Y when he was 15, and has since passed the Y Swim Instructor course to teach local kids to swim.

“Everyone is great at the Y,” Marx said. “The Y’s courses in CPR, Oxygen Administration and Lifeguarding really prepared me to work in this area. As a lifeguard and swim instructor, I feel it’s a great job for when I’m in school and to come home to in the summers when I’m at college.”

Courses available at the Y include:

  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Lifeguard Swim Test Training
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard 2012/ CPR/ First Aid Certification
  • American Red Cross Oxygen Administration Certification
  • Adult CPR Certification
  • Child/Infant CPR Certification

All safety certification and lifeguard training courses for teens and adults are held at the Y’s Family Health & Wellness Center, 166 Maple Avenue, Red Bank.  For more information on class times, fees and participation requirements, call 732.741.2504, ext. 11 or visit TheCommunityYMCA.org/Lifeguarding
