Chris Smith Supporter Endorses 'Aspirin Between Your Knees' After Reproductive Rights Query

Congressman's spokesman denounces comment, shown in video being distributed on the Web

A supporter of U.S. Rep. Christopher H. Smith staffing a Republican political table at a public festival told a woman asking about the 16-term congressman’s stance on reproductive rights to keep "an aspirin between your knees,’’ according to a video taken at the event.

The incident happened in Hamilton on Sept. 9. during the town’s SeptemberFest celebration, according to activist and Rutgers student Eva Grote.

Grote, 20, is seen in the video approaching a table that has a Chris Smith, R-NJ, re-election sign and a GOP elephant icon, where she has a brief interaction with at least two men who are unidentified.

Grote, who is distributing the video on YouTube and other online venues, in the video asks when Smith was to appear at the event because she wanted to ask the congressman about his stance on reproductive rights.

“Have you ever heard about keeping an aspirin between your knees?’’ one of the men says. “Works every time it's tried.’’

Grote said she was stunned.

“I couldn’t believe it,’’ she said. “I was thinking ‘doesn’t this guy know we’re filming this?' "

Grote said she approached the table believing it was Smith’s campaign base at the festival. She said she and about five members of her improvisational pro-woman group, FlashFem, waited for more than two hours for the congressman to arrive.

Jeff Sagnip, spokesman for Smith, said the men in the video were not involved with the congressman nor his re-election campaign, and he vehemently denounced the comment.

“Whoever it is was not and is not authorized to speak on behalf of Chris Smith,” Sagnip said. “The comments referencing aspirin are absolutely absurd.”

Grote said she did not hold Smith personally responsible for the comments of every one of his supporters.

"I think the legislation that Chris Smith supports helps legitimize the sentiments of that guy behind the table,'' Grote said. "I don't think Chris Smith goes around telling women to keep an aspirin between their legs, but the legislation he supports lends legitimacy for those kinds of statements.''

Grote cited Smith’s support of H.R.3, a House of Representatives bill that sought to prohibit federal funding for abortions except in the case of  "forcible rape,’’ or incest.

Smith sponsored the bill.

Critics have said the bill, which passed the House but never came up for a vote in the Senate, was a deliberate attempt to change the definition of rape by adding the qualifier "forcible.”

That phrase was ultimately stricken from the final version of the bill.

Smith represents New Jersey's 4th Congressional district, which includes Wall as well as numerous other Monmouth County towns, portions of Ocean and Mercer counties. He is opposed in the upcoming election by Democrat Brian Froelich.

Ms Grote...their are so many more issues that are much more compellingly important than your "reproductive rights". Those "rights', by the way, were gifted you at birth by God, and the only one who can take them away from you...is you! I do not want to hear that you are being denied those rights by having to pay for your your own birth control. Birth control is not a healthcare issue...it's a lifestyle choice. It only becomes a healthcare issue when one makes the personal lifestyle choices that lead to unwanted pregnancy. Take responsibility for yourself.

Not true that contraception is not a health issue. Let's see. Ovarian cyst syndrome, endometriosis, irregular menstruation, etc. ...and not to mention proper, safe, and healthful planning for pregnancy. Why should a politician or a company official determine a woman's healthcare needs and appropriate prescriptions?

Based on the story above, Ms. Grote simply asked about Mr. Smith's position on reproductive rights. She did not ask him to pay for anything. But just like all head-in-the-sand conservatives, you jumped to the conclusion that this was another Sandra Fluke situation. Well guess what? I could care less about your opinion on who pays for anyone's reproductive treatments. Take responsibility for your inaccurate post.

Who said anything about PAYING for anything? If Chris Smith had his way, women wouldn't be able to purchase birth control or contraceptives whatsoever. Cost is not the issue here. Smith wants to ban birth control altogether, not just make women pay for it themselves. Do realize how many MORE unwanted pregnancies there would be in this country if that were to happen?? Not to mention birth control is used to treat other women's health issues... but Smith doesn't seem to care. Earth to OldCoolBlues and Chris Smith supporters: this isn't 1960.

To OldCoolBlues,
Actually there are very few things more compelling important than Ms Grote’s “reproductive rights” precisely because they are a gift from God. And that is why you have no right to take those rights away, to interfere with them, or to make crude remarks about them. And that is why what Ms Grote does with her body and those rights are between herself, her Doctor and her God.

So this only begs the point....How come so many femenists think the taxpayers should be financing their abortions, & birth control medicines for their 'God given reproductive rights' If you're going to bring God into this, don't the Bible say you should be married before sex? I think they should clarify all of this with God & leave the taxpayers money out of it!

I think Grote and every other woman should have the right to determine her own reproductive rights. That's why I keep the plan "B" pill in a pez dispenser in the nightstand next to my bed. I encourage all the women who come over to chew them up like candy!

Marylou,
If the woman, or her employer are paying for health insurance, by all means she should be entitled to all coverages, whether reproductive or otherwise, that is covered in her plan. However....

Many women & Men seem to think my tax dollars should support their careless lifestyle, their poorly thought out choices...I do not agree.

There was no need for the word "forcible" in the legislation since rape, by definition, is carried our by force. It is and has been the defining qualifier of this heinous criminal act for centuries. According to Mirriam-Webster: " Rape...unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent." That being said, to try to sully the good reputation of Rep Smith because some guy's poor judgment in what he said to you, is in turn, poor judgment.

I agree with OldCoolBlues on the lifestyle & not a health issue.

Whenever people are convicted of crimes there is usually a fine they have to pay to the Violent Crimes Compensation Board, I think there is another fine levied when it is a sexual assault.

Shouldn't this money be used to help vifctims of rape?

What has the our House of Representatives done for our state. . .with it's growing unemployment, that can't produce jobs for it's college graduates? It's getting to the point that there is nothing these days that isn't being "walked back", "quoted out of context", being "mis-spoken", or spoken for first and apologized for later...

I am a woman, not a fan of Chris Smith, I'm not a big fan of abortion either, but believe in the woman's right to choose. This FlashFem organization... they seems like the type of radical organization that this country does not need. If you click on the link above and go to their twitter page, all their tweets are about "outing" any republican who doesn't agree with their cause. How do we know that these people they encountered are Chris Smith supporters? It doesn't matter. What does matter is that they gave the FlashFems fuel for their cause. Because it was at a Republican's festival, it makes the comment even more delicious because this group now feels doubly vindicated.

Aspirin, slice of Swiss cheese, post-it, - they all work. It is amazing to me that these radical feminists think that they have a right to have unprotected sex whenever they want and that everybody else should pay for the consequences of their actions. Smith introduced a bill banning federal funding for abortions. Good for him. There should be no federal or state funding of abortions for any reason except rape and incest. If women would keep their legs closed there would be no pregnancies for them to worry about. How about these radicals taking personal responsibility for their actions? If you want to have unprotected sex, be prepared to bear the consequences.

Marylou - my post was not about anyone's opinion on abortion. It was about whether women need to take responsibility for unprotected voluntary sex and who should be responsible for the consequences. I agree with you that men should keep their zippers closed but since the definition of voluntary means consent between the two parties, women, being the ones who get pregnant, can avoid the consequences by refusing consent. If they don't do so, the government, i.e., taxparers, should not be responsible for the cost of the abortion.

NB.It's a fact that Mr.Smith wants to outlaw abortions, not just cut off federal funding for them.so,if a 13 year old has sex with an adult, even if she is developementally disabled, and she becomes preegnant, the bill the Mr.Smith sponsers, would make it illegal for her to have an abortion. It also would outlaw some forms of birth control and the morning after pill, which would prevent pregnancy, and the ned for abortion.

So, you believe the only way to become pregnant with an unwanted pregnancy is to have unprotected sex? Never heard of a condom breaking or birth control pills failing because of antibiotic use? There are numerous scenarios that can occur to cause an unwanted pregnancy, not just unprotected sex. Educate yourself before posting. Also, again, no one mentioned having taxpayers or anyone else pay for abortions. You take care of your body and make your decisions and let everyone else decide what is best for them. What is next? Telling people they can only take cholesterol medication if they completely stop eating foods full of fat or if they run 3 miles every day because you think that is what is appropriate?
