Christie: "Get The Hell Off The Beaches In Asbury Park''
Governor pleads for people to leave barrier islands and beaches
Gov. Chris Christie announced today the mandatory evacuations of hundreds of thousands of people from the Jersey Shore area ahead of Hurricane Irene.
Christie listed mandatory evacuations in dozens of communities from Cape May through upper Monmouth County, affecting thousands along the shore.
In Monmouth County, mandatory evacuations include portions of Keansburg, Spring Lake, Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach, Asbury Park, Wall Township and Manasquan, Christie said.
Christie said Wall Township was under a mandatory evacuation. But Police Chief Robert Brice said Christie was incorrect. There is a targeted mandatory evacuation in parts of Wall Township, but not all of town, Brice said.
Christie implored residents in affected areas to get out of town tonight.
"Get the hell off the beaches in Asbury Park,'' Christie said. "It's 4:30 p.m. You've maximized your tan. Get off the beaches and get into your cars.''
Christie also said about 5,000 people could be accommodated at three emergency shelters to be set up in Monmouth County (See the full list here), but asked that people make other arrangements before considering one.
"Shelters are places of last resort,'' Christie said. "Do not go to a center because it's close to your house and driving to a friends' house would take an hour.''
Christie repeated a plea to residents on barrier islands to get out of their homes and seek shelter in a safer place.
"I don't want you people on the barrier islands waiting until tomorrow to leave,'' he said. "I want you to leave tonight.''
Christie's remarks follow a 12:15 p.m. news conference where he announced the closure of the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway south of Exit 98 beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, among other closures ahead of Hurricane Irene.

I am originally from NJ and Gov Christie is a disgrace. His rudeness is terrible for a public figure. How about he gets away from the refridgerator and maximizes his food intake. I hope the voters rmember his crudeness when they vote in 2013

I disagree Kathleen.....alot of people are ignorant and just plain stupid and understand "get the hell off the beach" more than muttering "please people, leave the beach!"

@Kathleen: you think it's funny someone called him fat, yet you want him to be nice and respectful? please. look to your own attitude.
no matter what you think of his politics, he's taking a strong stand to protect the people of NJ. maybe the governor of Louisiana should have done the same, Hmmm?

Just another case of Christie showing he has no class and is a bully. While schools all over the country are trying to get rid of bullies NJ is governed by one! I know he is trying to save lives but he could have shown some class. Let's just hope he runs for a position outside of NJ real soon.

I just heard Mayor Bloomberg on MSNBC telling people to evacuate and what else they need to be doing, I heard him say PLEASE many times and he talked respectfully but firmly, not rude and crass. Gov Christie did not have to add the remarks about the tans and use the word hell etc,. I have heard him talk rudely on other occasions, I don't care what party he belongs to and I do not think any politician is a God, though many of them seem to think they are. Some people when they get power use it in the wrong way. Rich I agree he is a bully. I think all politician whether they are Rep or Dem or Tea Party do not have any interests but their own on their agendas, Just my opinion and I try to respect others opinions as well you do not have to agree but try to respect others opinions as well as your own.

Because NJ will always be my home, I was born and raised there and I love NJ, we only moved as my daughter moved to Florida and I wanted to be near she and my grandkids and also NJ was getting too expensive , I still have family there and not to go into it some have been directly affected by some things he has done. I don't like rude people and I apologize if I have offended anyone, this is just my opinion I just thought his remark about maximizing their tans was rude many people go to the shore and spend money and it was not necessary to me to be insulting. I don't like to offend anyone and I guess some of my comments were not too nice either but as I said I have seen him before talk very nasty to people and it is uncalled for.

Scarletg I do admit some of my comments were rude, but I do still feel as a public figure he needs to use a little restraint to his sarcasm, he does not need to come off sounding like Mr. Tough Guy , I realize he is only human but I think when you are in the spotlight so to speak you need to conduct yourself better and not talk down to people as if they were stupid. If they had been told there was a certain time to be off the beach and did not heed the warning then I could understand it but from what I could see it was the first time. I just get a little hot headed when something hits me like that. Hope you weathered the storm okay I have been in touch with all friends and family up there and thank God they are all fine and no loss of property or anything,.

I disagree, Many NJ individuals need to be told in this way because they don't listen. They laugh everything off and more than half don't pay attention and the other half is not to bright at least to me.
