Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Day 9: Seriously? Nine Days?

Lots of people have it worse, yes, but we could do a lot more to help them if we had power ourselves

Nine days.

This is the ninth day without power in large chunks of Wall Township – a town that was largely spared from the wholesale destruction that Hurricane Sandy wrought on our nearest neighbors.

Jersey Central Power & Light says there are about 2,500 still without power in town. Our informal survey of Wall Patch readers leads us to believe that number is higher.

And in just hours, another serious storm is about to bear down on the area.

Although there are certainly pockets, some larger than others, around town that are also without power, the areas hardest hit in town appear to be in North Wall. Those are the areas in greatest proximity to the JCP&L substation on Brighton Avenue and Marconi Road, where on Tuesday a phalanx of utility workers gathered and appeared to be working feverishly to repair damage to the facility.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Officials have said the station suffered significant damage during the storm. The number of workers and trucks and activity there Tuesday supports that.

If you’re still without power, call JCP&L again. And again. Their number is 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877).

No, it’s not as bad as losing your house. No it’s not as bad as five feet of water in your basement, or your entire street being wiped out or large portions of the beach in your living room, but nine days without power is going to wear on your nerves, no question.

Below, feel free to complain, kvetch, and get it out in the comments section below. It’s fine, really. Let’s just try to keep it clean.

Hopefully when this is all said and done JCP&L does their due diligence and rebuilds sub-stations away from oceans, rivers and inlets. Also, it would be nice if the township (after they get over their big win hangover) continue to update the residents still affected by the storm with specifics to quell rumors. Power being restored in 7-10 days isn’t specifics it’s a generalization. Go Obama…

I'll start. Why is it, exactly, that we're operating with this 19th century technology? We can put remote control cars on Mars, but we can't put power lines under ground, thereby eliminating power outages at all?

Also, if JCP&L really is a "public utility," why can't I deduct from my next bill -- which I received, by the way, while my power was out -- the cost of batteries and flashlights and gas for a generator and all the other things I had to buy because my power was out?

you can run lines under ground, but if the substation is damaged how high or low the lines are will not effect the outages very much. If the lines are not live i do not see why they cant work around the clock. i will stand out there with a spot light if it would help.

Running lines underground doesn't solve all problems.... Manhatten below 34th was out for days and it is all underground.

In Farmingdale on my street the power lines are underground and we were without power until Sunday. So much for underground lines!

So who do we send a bill to at JCP&L for all the money those of us fortunate enough to have a generator are spending to power them ? At last count, I'm almost $60 a day, that I can't use for anything other then gas ? Eventually JCP&L will get the missing parts for the Marconi substation, get the system back on line, and then the next storm comes and we're without power again for 2 weeks. Point Pleasant has power. They took a much more severe hit then Wall did, but they have power. Seriously, heads need to roll on this one. This is completely unacceptable.

Why aren't there any updates from the town for people who don't have Internet Access or Smartphones? Why isn't there a truck with a megaphone going around to neighborhoods telling folks what's up? Also, while I'm Kvetching, why isn't there a warming station for folks to go to in town? A place where they can see the news, get warm, be around other folks, and then go home to their freezing houses and climb under the covers in a dark house till daylight?

I would like to know where our elected officials in Wall Twsp. are. I emailed the mayor last week and still have not heard back as to what their plan is to help the people of Wall.

I saw they did set up lights over at the substation. I drive past the substation several times a day, and most days they are gone by 7 pm. Why aren't they sending overnight crews if they have spotlights set up?

I'm sure most of us noticed that Foster's gas station didn't have a problem opening its gas pumps as soon as the power came back in his neighborhood to take advantage of the crisis.
After volunteering in Belmar for the past week, I can tell you that they know how to prepare and respond to such events. The entire town is out and they have no problem communicating with the residents. They go above and beyond. At least once a day they send out a robocall (which Wall has done, incessantly), but Belmar has also sent volunteers out EVERY SINGLE DAY (and on some days twice a day) to go door to door to hand out daily information flyers advising residents what services are available and the status of issues.
Surely Wall has the resources to to that, or maybe they are too busy picking out fancy new garbage trucks. Or, maybe the Wall Committee is still holding to the GOP failed mantra of "pick yourself up by your bootstraps". Luckily, last night the nation proved that it doesn't buy that nonsense, especally when people really need help.
Wall Committee, here's a suggestion, get a list of streets from JCP&L that are out of power and get the correct information to those neighborhoods. Maybe then try to work for the residents, rather than, in spite of them.
The real difference between town hall in Wall and Belmar- leadership and compassion. Belmar has it and Wall doesn't.

Can't they throw some switches and move us onto another portion of the grid that's working? It's not like it's summertime with all those air conditioners taxing the line capacities.

I, too, am without power. However, I consider myself extremely lucky. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy's devastation, I have a car, my family is safe, and I HAVE a home. Thousands of local residents are not that fortunate. So many have lost so much. The Jersey Shore as we know it is no more. The stress of this storm has made all of us frustrated and intolerant. When it starts to overwhelm me, I just think of those whose lives will never be the same. I commend the many volunteers in our community who are putting their personal problems aside to help the true victims. The first thing I will do when I am able to return to my home is look for a way to help.

The Cablevision office on 18th is open. Perhaps people can go there to watch the news? I know they're accepting payments. My Husband just went and paid our bill yesterday. Lets see if we get a credit.

Sea Girt Estates area in South Wall without power too. I'm not blaming anyone. I'm trying not to complain. But I feel toxic right now. Every time someone says "Oh! Come over! Do your laundry! Hang out in our warm home with food!" I want to punch them. Is that bad?

It doesn't seem to me that you have mixed feelings at all, Karen. I think your feelings are completely appropriate and normal, in their own strange and twisted way. If you are not responsible to monitor your feelings, who is?? Nothing mixed about feeling like punching your dear sweet friends!! I hope you enjoy wearing dirty clothes while sitting in the dark and freezing. I promise I won't ask you if you need anything, or at least, if I do, I will remember to duck. You have given fair warning.

Karen, we it's normal to have mixed feelings. You are not responsible to monitor them, only your actions. However, I wouldn't tell the people who are offering you things anything about these feelings.

We need to not just vent about this but also investigate and find out the reason why the electrical grid and sub station on Marconi rd. are so antiquated. Perhaps if all residents of Wall twp. refused to pay our JCPL bill for a few months as an act of civil disobedience they will see how serious we are about this problem. Hopefully local gov't will spearhead some sort of investigation on this.

Which neighborhoods do not have power?

I will cut JCPL a little slack for the substation but once that is back up and running don't they need to fix the pole that is closing Marconi right up the road. How about while they fiddle with the substation they also address the pole so that once power is back it will get to Shark River Manor. I also would like to better understand why they can't do a better job of routing power from those areas that have it to those that don't but can be connected.

I can only imagine if this were a much higher category storm. It's easy when everything is devastated and homes are gone not to expect power but when 99.9% of the homes are fine it is hard to understand.

Again this is complaining when your are far luckier than others but it just seems that the restoration could have been better.

I know for a fact that the utility trucks are working around the clocks. I think its more important that people ban together now instead of complaining and finger pointing. I am in the North Wall area too, and have been without power since the beginning, but I found that helping those who are worse off than me preserved my sanity throughout this. In the process of helping I was able to see the selfless outpouring of concern, which has restored my faith in humanity. All I can feel is blessed right now that my family is safe.

@jerseyswamps: Rockafeller Estates - Still. No. Power.

There are parts of India that have lost and regained power four times since this storm left us. :)

That's probably so when you call JCP&L to complain they can put you through to their call center in India.
