UPDATE: Abused Dog Responding To Treatment

Couple "made up the whole story" of finding the animal in Wall, authorities say

Sunday Update: The dog a Brick man said was found on the side of Belmar Boulevard Friday is resting comfortably and making strides toward recovery, veternary staff said.

Samurai continues to receive small amounts of food while veternarians try to gradually build the aged Cocker Spaniel's strength and is doing as well as can be expected.

"Sammy did well through the night and remains stable this morning,'' Red Bank Veterinary Hospital staff said. "We are continuing to offer him small amounts of food which he is taking like a champ! He remains on antibiotics and pain medication."

Saturday:

The ailing cocker spaniel brought to a Tinton Falls shelter Thursday by a couple falsely claiming to have found it struggling for life on the side of a road is resting comfortably at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.

The dog, who Associated Humane Society workers named "Morgan" after the man who they belived "saved'' the dog, is still in critical condition but is being tended to, free of charge, by hospital staff. It's real name, according to hospital staff, is "Samurai.''

"Samurai is resting comfortably in our hospital under the loving care of many doctors and technicians," a post on the hospital's Facebook page reads. "He remains in critical condition."

Previously:

They said they found a dog in a garbage bag on the side of a Wall Township road Thursday.

But a Brick Township couple has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after it was found that the pair never found the dog at all. It was their own animal.

Keith Morgan, 56, and his wife Shauna Morgan, 43, were arrested today at the couple’s Sawmill Road home by officers from the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said Victor “Buddy” Amato, chief SPCA law enforcment officer.

“They made up the whole story,’’ Amato said.

The couple is also charged with filing a false police report, Amato said.

The dog, a Cocker Spaniel known as “Morgan,’’ was brought to the Associate Human Society’s office on Shafto Road in Tinton Falls Thursday covered in feces and urine, humane society officials said.

AHS officials have said the dog suffered severe neglect and is on a feeding tube.

Previously Reported:

A motorist driving on Belmar Boulevard on Thursday noticed a movement in a garbage bag on the side of the road, officials said.

It was a live dog, covered in feces and ill, left to die an inhumane death.

The Cocker Spaniel was taken to the Associated Humane Society in nearby Tinton Falls, where the aging dog has been named "Morgan,'' Humane Society staff said.

"We at AHS are offering a $500 reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for treating Morgan in this unthinkable way," according to a release from the AHA. "We will keep the public updated on Morgan's progress as he begins the healing process."

For more information on Morgan, e-mail tintonfallsahs@aol.com or call the AHS at 732-922-0100. The Society is located at 2960 Shafto Road, Tinton Falls 07753. The Society is open 7 days a week for adoptions from noon until 4 p.m.

Anyone posting pictures/full names of these two morons around the town they live in with "Animal Abusers" written on them? If I lived there I would be up all night posting hundreds all over town....Everyone that lives near them should be made aware of the fact that if a person can do this to a dog, they certainly can do so to a child!

My heart aches for this poor innocent creature left to die. Dogs are man's best friend as normal loving people are aware. The SOB responsible for it's abuse must be punished to the fullest extend of the law and incarcerated. His name must appear on a newly created Animal Abuse website as all criminals should.

I am a dog groomer from nyc and quite often dogs come in in badly matted state where u no the dog is uncomfortable, and like little children i scold the owner that brings them in . I also check on them weeks and months after that visit. most of them return in a acceptable time frame for this not to happen. (shame shame for being ignorant) but these people there was somethiong wrong a long time ago. i hope he gets urine burns on his weenie and starved like that poor dog. i just hope the dog gets well enough to be adopted so he can see that suffering is not the way to live, that he gets to enjoy love and affection and days without pain at least for a little while. that doggie needs to experience a healthy relationship with a human. we are not all animals!

to answer patricia miller's question the reason animals have very few protections is because they are only protected under the feeble agricultural laws. the penal laws dont apply although they need to. believe it or not this keith and shauna morgan who did this to the dog not only claimed they found it to collect the $500 reward for treating the dog horribly for years but morgan was actually on the ch 62 news acting like a hero for finding his own dog. they have another dog in their home that should have been removed already from their 306 sawmill ave , brick home. the max a judge can give them is 6 months but i,m willing to bet that this is yet just another judge who will send them home with a $100 fine. does anyone know the name of the prosecutor in this case? everyone should be sending him letters asking for the max.

These evil-loving creatures need to get at least 10 years behind bars. I'm sick of this slap-on-the-wrist punishment for animal abuse This animal abuse that is running rampant in our country MUST STOP!! What is wrong with these types of people? They actually take enjoyment out of seeing the suffering of a helpless animals.
Would they treat their child like this? Never changing a diaper? Urine burnt skin? Ear infections that the child goes deaf? That's what they did to this poor dog who wanted nothing but to be loved. Any animal you adopt is family and should be treated as such..with love, nurturing, compassion.
I am in the process of attempting to adopt Sammy and if chosen, I will give him the best home ever with my poodle of 12 years!

I hope these 2 bastards drop dead.

This is an absolute horrible cruel thing, but it seems to be going on all over. Something is wrong with people who hurt an innocent creature. My understanding , if correct is that the wife is a teacher. We do need stronger laws to protect them. I have contacted Senator Tom Kean. There is a Senate Bill S1303 they are trying to pass . I think we should all write to him. I have already done so. Pray this dog survives and finds a happy home. The people should be jailed, or as someone mentioned how about a public stone throwing . They deserve something like that.

All of the hanging, spitting, draw and quartering, etc talk will do nothing except put these horrible people in protective custody (which we pay for). Why don't we all look into the Bill S1303, writie letters to our leaders, pray for Sammy and consider adopting an animal from a shelter. Sammy, upon recovery will no doubt have an outstanding home to be placed. There are soo many more stories that do not get the press. So many more perfectly good animals who need to give and receive love.

I have 2 adopted rescue animals already, cant afford another one right now, but would really like to know what this Bill S1303 is. It seems that we folks that vote our lawmakers into office should know a lot more about what they believe in than we are told when they are running for election. I realize things seem to "change" once they are elected and our trust goes out the window, but we would have something to go on. I have seen other abuse cases what with dogs, cats, horses and other creatures and not much ever really happens to the perpetrators, that would be considered sufficient.

Kathleen

5:24 pm on Monday, March 18, 2013

For Gail Sands and others . S1303 replaces Patrick' Law. Senator Tom Kean addressed this bill. It is a revision on penalties for animal cruelty. It increases with the degree of offense. It has passed Senate, but not put into law yet. I do not know how strong this bill is, but something has to help all this ugly cruelty to these defenseless animals.

I have a cocker...who has a very similar story! He was left in a crate 24hrs a day..his coat was matted with crate marks and sores all over his body..and the previous owners cut off his "cocker nub" down to NOTHING! Just a tiny bone...we found him covered in feces and urine and very malnourished as well. He also had a pinch collar on and the skin grew over it!! The owners left him on the doorstep of a neighbor...who called me immediately asking me what to do...since I'm all about RESCUE! We saw our precious Mr. Bojangles (ironically, his original name was my husband's name and i know that only because the pinch collar had a tag with only his name). I took him immediately to tinton falls animal hospital (who are some of the best people ever!!!)....and immediately our decision was made...THAT DOG IS OURS...NO MATTER THE COST! In 2006 and $4000 later...and a very long recovery...we were able to bring him to the home he LOVES today :)...It took us about a year to nurse him back to health...mentally and physically!!!! We're not sure how old he is...but they "guesstimated" that he was about 3 to 4 yrs old at the time. Mr. Bojangles is now happy, very healthy, a bed hog, never barks, shakes his entire butt when he's happy cause there is no tail to wag & just loves to be loved! WILL "SAMMI" BE PLACED FOR ADOPTION? WE WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO ADD HIM AS ANOTHER MEMBER OF MY SMALL FAMILY...Mr bojangles who thinks he's human..sammi would fit right in!

I can see the pain in this poor dog's eyes. If he recovers, I am sure he will forgive the stupidity of the humans that put him in this condition. That is the amazing spirit of the dog & man's best friend. He will just need to learn to trust again and he will if he finds the right person with a kind touch. The laws need to be changed. Animals are considered personal property and live stock. The penalties for abuse are minimal. Have any of you been to a puppy mill lately? These are the breeders who supply the puppies to the pet stores or the people you buy your pets from on line or find in the newspapers. Unfortunately the breeder dogs both M & FM have that same sad look in their eyes as Sami and have the same horrible living conditions as Sami & most times they are 100x's worse. So when you consider getting a pet, adopt, rescue, but do not buy!!!! There are a ton of rescues out there for every kind of pet you could imagine. For every pet you buy there are multiple animals being euthanized because no one wanted them. Don't let the add in the paper or on line about the family raised, farm raised, had fed AKC registered puppy kid you. Ask to see the barn & go into it & you will see tons of dogs living in the same conditions or 100x's worse than Sami. Volunteer at a rescue in the middle of puppy mill country and see the horrors of the Puppy Mills first hand. It's an eye opener. I challenge you to research puppy mills on line and to spread the word about them.

Skitch you couldn't be anymore spot on. Stop buying from breeders! Each animal bought from low-life breeders kills another shelter/rescue animal. Rescue animals are so grateful, they know they were rescued & are undyingly appreciative.

The stats are: 1 in 10 from any litter get a good forever home. So, 9 animals out of every10 are unloved. Animals are not disposable!! Stop abandoning animals, animals are forever, they are furry children. Please everyone, adopt from rescues & shelters!
