FDU Poll: Obama's OK, Women Cool on Romney

About half approve of job president is doing

Our Republican governor gets good marks from the Garden State, but so does our Democratic president, according to the latest poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind.

Barack Obama also has a solid lead over Mitt Romney in New Jersey, according to the poll — especially among women.

Read the full statement from FDU below, then take our own poll to let us know what you think.

According the latest poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind™, 50 percent of New Jersey voters say they approve of the way the president is handling his job, while 42 percent disapprove. These numbers mirror the support expressed by New Jerseyans for their Republican governor, Chris Christie, as reported yesterday: 56 percent approve of the job Christie is doing, compared to 33 percent who disapprove.

“What’s interesting is the fact that these men are from different parties, during a time of sharp partisan division, and yet they garner about the same support,” said FDU political scientist and poll analyst Krista Jenkins. “Obama’s popularity in the Garden State doesn’t detract from Christie’s, and vice versa. Both clearly bring something to the table that works for New Jerseyans.”

When it comes to the all-important horse-race, Obama bests the presumptive Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, by fourteen points (50-36 percent).  And behind those numbers, the gender gap is a sizable obstacle for Romney to overcome. Although men are about equally divided in their support for the candidates (45% Obama; 42% Romney), the majority of women say they’d vote for Obama if the election were held today (54%-31%). Women are also significantly more likely to approve of Obama’s job performance (55%) than men (45%).

“What we’re seeing in New Jersey confirms what’s going on nationally,” said Jenkins. “Judging by the size of Romney’s deficit with women voters, gender is going to play a sizable role in the outcome of this election.”

However, the gender gap doesn’t hold up when the question turns to perceptions of the direction in which the country is headed. The majority of respondents (56%) believe the country is on the wrong track, and men (57%) and women (55%) are about equally pessimistic.

“When we step back and look at what these numbers are telling us, it’s that New Jersey women are just as unhappy with where this country is headed, but draw a completely different conclusion than men about the choice of candidates and the solutions they’re offering,” said Jenkins.

The Fairleigh Dickinson University poll of 797 registered voters statewide was conducted by telephone using both landlines and cell phones from April 30 through May 6, 2012, and has a margin of error of +/-3.5 percentage points.

The President is doing a great job considering what hand he was dealt when he took over in 2009. He has received very little help from our elected leaders in congress who think it is their business to try to get the president un-elected instead of doing the business of the people. Partisan politics is so bad in this country and with groups who are more concerned with ideology then problem solving I think the president has done a marvelous job under such awful circumstances. When FDR took over during the last great depression it took him a decade to get the country back on track and Americans must realize the president can not force industry to hire more people. Capitalism has good points but this is one of them that is not good for our country. Corporations are not interested in hiring they are interested in making money and squeezing as much as possible out of every worker they can for the least amount of dollars.

The President has you fooled. He has you thinking that he's not in bed with the big corporations. But if they're on his list of donors, he has absolutely no problem either giving them a fat taxpayer-funded bailout (Solyndra), allowing them to pay $0 in taxes (GE), or even outright purchasing them on our dime (General/Government Motors). Much like his predecessor, he is the very definition of a crony capitalism. So is the presumptive Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, who actually approves of many of the crony capitalist acts of both the previous and present administrations.

You can bemoan the partisan bickering and electoral gridlock in Washington, but that's just how things have always been, regardless of the occupant of the White House. I think you also falsely attribute FDR to "getting the nation back on track" when his big spending ways actually dug a much deeper hole for the country. Seems to me that you have a bias toward liberal Democrats as you try to either spin or use revisionist history. The one terrible thing that has been done by the Obama administration that simply cannot be overlooked: tacking on over $4 trillion in new debt. All that money spent, and I can't think of one significant way that our lives have improved.

Aside from party affiliation, the current boss is not much different from the previous boss. Both are big spending warmongering crony capitalists. We need a change, and it's not one that either Romney or four more years of Obama can provide.

@Bob - seems you have one set of standards for the D in the Whitehouse and another for the R's on the town committee . . . . . talk about ideology. As for "sqeezing" the Government is the biggest "sqeezer" of all - and we have not choice when they decide to TAKE our money.

When you are broke you just cant go and spend more money because you have some needs that you cant afford. If they are so urgent then you cut your expenses somewhere else to pay for if like letting go of 20% of the towns work force and then cross training the rest of the employees to be able to fill in where needed. That is what a sinking ship does to stay afloat.. NOT raise taxes because they are so incompetent that they dont even have one idea and how to balance their budget. The town totally lacks any leadership and as I said before they are unqualified to run this town. You get what you pay for and we are getting nothing with the knuckle heads who are running this town into the ground. It is so easy to go with the status quo its hard to be a true leader and we desparately are lacking any leadsership in this town government I blame the voters for allowing this to happen. They keep voting these knuckleheads into office. Do no vote for any incumbent. They have screwed this town enough.

More fuzzy math coming out of Washington? I can only pray that the masses wake up in time for November to get this crew out of Washington.

I want to know who it is that they are asking about our governor. I wish someone would ask me and the opinion would not be favorable at all.

Obama will do and say ANYTHING to keep the focus off the economy and unemployment rates. Key subjects he was elected on but hasn't delivered on. Be prepared to be bombarded by tons of "little topics" for the next several months ~ but not on the big issues if he can help it.

Check out the Rasmussen poll - it's the most accurate. The lib colleges pump out numbers to sway public opinion.

I don't totally agree with Ms Jenkins when she said:“What we’re seeing in New Jersey confirms what’s going on nationally” With the election six months off. . .the President has a rough road ahead of him nationally in holding onto and persuading voters...social issues being one(woman voting on) I do believe the out come in November will depend on independent woman. . .if enough off them can counter the male independents who will vote against Obama?

Bob Smith, you hero had two full years with absolute control to "change the world". All we got is the looming disaster of "Obamacare". We have heard all kinds of horror stories that will happen once this is in place. Just remember, whenever the government runs ANYTHING it will turn out even worse than anyone can imagine.

Read candidate proposals to find out where they stand on issues. More important than a simple vote of 'yay' or 'nay' is the plan that a candidate comes up with to fix a problem. Reading candidate proposals are a much better way of finding out where they stand on an issue, but more importantly their plan to fix the issue. Thanks a lot.
