Martell's to Mayor: Stay Out!

Boardwalk business tells mayor he's not welcome at Sat. night event honoring local volunteers and workers

Martell's is telling Point Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella he won't be allowed to attend the annual Chamber of Commerce Installation dinner at Martell's on Saturday night.

Barrella broke the news at the Tuesday night council meeting, as Ed Brannagan, Martell's manager, and Carol Vaccaro, chamber executive director, sat in the back of the room.

This year the event honors local fire and first aid volunteers and Point Beach employees who rescued residents, responded to numerous calls and cleaned up the town after Superstorm Sandy.

Ronald Gasiorowski, attorney for Martell's, wrote an email to Municipal Attorney Sean Gertner late Tuesday afternoon saying that as Martell's litigation is still pending against the municipality, Barrella will not be allowed to attend the Saturday night event, which is open to the public (see full text of letter as attached PDF).

Barrella said during the meeting, "Usually, I couldn't give a rat's behind. But it's not (about) me. It's disrespectful of the office of the mayor of Point Pleasant Beach."

Barrella noted that the email was cc'd to David Bassinder, former owner of Martell's whose son, Scott Bassinder, had acquired the business.

"This wasn't sent from or cc'd to Scott, so I'm hoping that means he doesn't share his father's opinion," Barrella said.

Chamber honoring local first aid and fire volunteers and municipal police and public works employees for service in Sandy's aftermath

Every year the chamber selects different local business people, officials or residents to honor at the annual Installation Dinner. This year, the chamber is honoring the local volunteer fire and first aid squads and the Point Beach police and Public Works departments.

"Those are my volunteers and employees," said Barrella. "They're honoring police, fire, first aid and DPW. I'm planning on going. If I'm denied, I'm denied. I'll stand outside and greet my employees and volunteers as they walk in."

Barrella also noted that every year he is invited to swear in the new officers of the board of directors of the chamber.

Barrella said, "What complicates this is where the chamber is holding the event. Ed Branagan, the manager of Martell's, is the chamber president. Maybe they chose Martell's in deference to him.

"The chamber is not a political organization," Barrella said.

"It's not like a political organization holding a victory party, a celebration, hosted by a business suing the town," he said, clearly making a reference to the three Republican council members, Bill Mayer, Stephen Reid and Andy Cortes, holding their celebration at Martell's after the Jan. 5 organization meeting.

"Sometimes I may get aggressive in what I say, I probably could have done a better job in the way I approached it," acknowledged Barrella, who once called David Bassinder "a small man" because he asked the town to use its parking lot even as Martell's was suing the town.

At the time, Barrella said, "I would have told him, yes, sure, use our sandy lot. I just can't believe he asked." After the measure got enough council support, Barrella actually did notify Brannagan that Martell's could use the town's lot, but Martell's had decided on a different alternative.

Martell's Manager Says He Didn't Know About the Company Email

During the meeting, Brannagan left the room and Patch followed, asking him if he had known about Gasiorowski's letter.

"No, I didn't know," Brannagan said. "I came to the meeting tonight because I'm president of the chamber now," said Brannagan, who is among those who were to be sworn in by Barrella on Saturday night.

Branagan said he didn't know if Scott Bassinder knew about Gasiorowski's letter.

When asked how he feels about the mayor being kept out of the party, Branagan said, "My goal is to try to bring the town together. There is an anger issue in this town. The businesses have to run their businesses. The parking plan killed our business."

When asked how the parking plan had such a detrimental effect on Martell's, and yet Jenkinson's owners feel it did not significantly hurt their businesses, he said, "I don't know. But I have trouble, as the manager of Martell's, with a parking plan that puts restrictions on our customers."

He did not care to comment on whether Gasiorowski's email should have been sent.

Vaccaro then left the meeting room and was also asked how she felt about the mayor not being allowed into Saturday's event.

"I'm disappointed," she said, declining further comment.

The parking plan is the one remaining sticking point in pending litigation between Martell's and the town.

Originally, Martell's and Jenkinson's had sued the town regarding its proposal mandating that bars stop serving alcohol at midnight, rather than the current 2 a.m. closing.

That ordinance was stayed by the state and is now being repealed by the council members, who agreed that the parking plan combined with an increased police presence was enough to help stem drunkenness, the dumping of trash and loud noise on residential streets in the wee hours during the summer.

Following Sandy, Jenkinson's and Martell's each met with Barrella to try to arrive at a settlement. Jenkinson's decided that if the town dropped the earlier bar closing ordinance, they could live with a parking plan of some sort and withdraw their lawsuit. However, Gasiorowski said Martell's is not backing down on their suit against the parking plan.

On Tuesday night, council voted 4 to 3 for first reading of a revised parking plan that includes District 4, except Channel Drive, adds a small section of District 3 and changes the hours from what had been midnight to 6 a.m. to 12:30 to 4 a.m. (Patch will post a separate story on the parking plan.)

The parking plan will only be in effect in the summer. Second reading and adoption are scheduled for the March 5 council meeting.

Barrella noted this is not the first time David Bassinder has told someone to stay home.

"He did this to Kris Tooker with a county Republican event and cc'd the letter to George Gilmore, the county Republican chair," said Barrella, who had also made reference to that at the January organization meeting, saying Bassinder had uninvited Councilmember Kris Tooker and she was on the committee hosting the event.

Tooker said after Tuesday night's meeting that ever since Bassinder uninvited her from the county Republican event in June 2012, she would not feel comfortable going to Martell's.

After the meeting, when asked if they are going to Martell's Saturday night, Council members Andy Cortes and William Mayer said they are (Patch was unable to catch up with other council members after the late meeting to ask if they are attending).

When asked if Martell's made the right move telling the mayor to stay away, Cortes would only say, "It's hard for people to separate themselves from other issues. It's a chamber function."

Resident Ben DiSpoto said he thought Martell's decision "was not a smart move."

He probably won't see too many of the volunteers showing up for this dinner as the price of a ticket is too steep for most of then - just saying.

Another wonderful headline from Point Pleasant Beach! The volunteers, first responders...bona fide hero's deserve the recognition from their local dignitaries. Hopefully whatever misguided pride involved here can be tossed aside for a few hours as the interests of these well deserved others are put first. I'm not happy about the extension of the parking plan but where's that article? Going out of your way & putting your demand in writing is just as lame as the decision to read it in front of everyone at a council meeting although admittedly, it is something that needed to be shared but there's a time and a place. Council meetings are not. Installation dinners honoring our own are not. These things don't happen every week, lets get it together & can we please start positively promoting Point Pleasant Beach? I still get calls asking if the bridges to town are open yet gang - I know some don't care but local businesses, ALL of them...property values are all in peril. There are bigger things happening and the fact that all that has come from last night's council meeting is this shameful bit of news is proof positive that we are in real trouble. You both said your piece - congratulations and: http://youtu.be/CspjqdA8aPI (thats sarcasm)

Barrella complain that someone is disrespecting the office of Mayor of Point Pleasant Beach is pretty funny, don’t you think? This from the man who has single handily done more to disrupt the respect people used to have for this office. It is Barrella who has used his office to divide the town, who has used the office as a bully pulpit to attack those he perceives as his enemies, who brings shame to PPB by exaggerating the issues with our summer visitors, and all for selfish political purposes and personal vendettas. It is Barrella’s vendetta politics that has brought disrespect to the office of Mayor of PPB.

The only reason Barrella is upset is he is afraid of missing an opportunity to try and glom on the first responders for political purposes. Typical Barrella: play politics with PPB for his selfish political purposes.

Woah - people do what they can and HOW they can. Mayor Barella spending a little time with responders is what he could do, holding a fundraiser to the tune of THOUSANDS of $$$ for needy families nearly obliterated by Sandy, just before Christmas was what Martell's could do...in addition to the "shore up the school" events etc... Other than that they've been trying to fix the major portions of their establishment that was washed away in the storm. Why can't anyone talk sensibly here, yeesh.

Beach, I'm glad to hear that the Mayor came out during the storm to spend a little time with the responders. Isn't that what we'd expect from the town's Mayor? Honestly, I wasn't sure if Mayor Barrella was even going to be in town for the storm, as I saw Tooker on the tv as acting Mayor shortly before the storm. That made me nervous, although I did remind myself that our police and first responders were here and would make sure the job got done, with or without the Mayor. As for Martell's, I think you're selling them very short. Martell's obviously sustained significant damage as a result of Sandy, and our Council wasn't willing to let them use town property to help rebuild. Even so, Martell's has done a lot to help the people of PPB, hosting fundraising events as well as contributing to large meal events for those who were displaced from the storm. Those who have been the benefit of these generous acts are truly grateful, even if they weren't publicized to everyone in the town. As Mr. Ward said, people do what they can and how they can. I am not willing to pass judgment on either the Mayor or Martells for what help they provided after Sandy. I had hoped that, with the devastation of Sandy, the Mayor and Martells would come together, but the Mayor really wrecked that with his comments about Bassinder when Martells asked to use the town property. Here's an idea: perhaps, when the Mayor realizes that he has gone too far, he could apologize?

James and Nick, OK, you're right. I typed that reply while I was angry and I should have taken a few deep breaths and thought it through. Martell's HAS done some good things for the town but suing EACH AND EVERY property owner doesn't exactly make the list.

Beach, I know that all of this is very frustrating. And, I understand your point that the money to pay to defend the lawsuits comes from all of our pockets (I mean, Martells isn't really suing each and every one of us, just the town government). But, really, what choice do they have if the majority of the town government won't work something out with them outside of court? Barrella has said that he's not afraid of litigation and has a lot of confidence in our Borough Attorney, so who knows...maybe the town will win the lawsuit.

Barrella should have kept his mouth shut and taken his punishment like a man. This is the problem with Mr. Barrella; it is always about what is best for Mr. Barrella, not what is best for PPB. How does Mr. Barrella whining about Martell’s excluding him help PPB?

First, THANK YOU...for every day thank you - and to answer your question simply: "It doesn't". Was not the right time/place but a chamber event isn't the time/place to put those other issues on a pedestal either. In any other venue it would be a non issue but instead this nonsense is in the forefront over other issues like a possible town-wide effort for a hazard mitigation grant, the new ABFE issues impacting EVERYONE, the uphill battle in spreading awareness that "We're Open"... FYI the HMPG is a competitive grant the town must partake, individuals apply to the town then they submit as a town, as one...imagine that. The original deadline for that was TODAY - but we are talking about more parking signs and grandstanding with letters.

So many unfortunate issues regarding the recent history of our town being brought up in this article. First, there's the battle between Martells and some of our government officials, partially over the parking plan. Those elected officials couldn't put the parking plan litigation aside when Martells asked to use the town parking lot to rebuild. Now, Martells seems unwilling to put the litigation aside to allow the Mayor to attend this event for the Chamber and the first responders. The Mayor has told many people that he wouldn't set foot in Martells ever, so I do wonder whether the Mayor was going to attend this event anyway. I notice that the Mayor is uncertain as to whether Scott Bassinder feels that the Mayor should be excluded. Um, why didn't the Mayor simply call Scott on the phone and ask him? Why didn't the Mayor call Gasiorowski and ask if there was anything he could do to improve the situation? Why did this have to be made into a public statement, at this point, without people acting like grownups and trying to settle the matter themselves? We've taken the focus off of where it should be...the nature of the event. Second, why was Tooker interested in attending a Republican County event in June 2012? She was no longer functioning as a Republican by that time. She broke from the party in June 2011, and ran with Barrella & Corbally. She served as a campaign manager for two Independent candidate campaigns, starting in 2012. She's not a Republican.

Mayor Barella's home was flooded during the storm. Martell's lost a major portion of their pier. Both sides in this dispute have been badly hurt by Sandy. The mayor has worked tirelessly to help neighbors recover. Martell's has made significant contributions towards that same end. Mr. Ward's absolutely right: the world has changed since October 30th and the one thing missing is for both sides to find a way to start working together, for the good of both and for the good of us all.

First of all, I don't think Martell's has never held a fundraiser without making money for themselves unless it was for political favors. They may donate the building and food, which cost next to nothing, but they always have a cash bar, which is where all of the profit is made. I know, my girlfriend has been a bartender there for several years. And FYI, although ths son, Scott, may technically be the "owner", it is still the father, David, who calls the shots on the important issues. A couple of years ago when there was a problem with the bartenders stealing money, it was the father who came in and took control of the situation. I am sure it is the father who deals with the town issues too.

Shame on the Mayor for calling Mr. Bassinder a "small man", and shame on Mr. Bassinder for not letting the Mayor into Martell's. They both act like spoiled children. What the town doesn't seem to realize is that Martell's is not dropping the parking lawsuit. Jenk's did, but Martell's did not. WAKE UP PEOPLE!! The town is still going to have to defend itself in the legal system. Obviously the Bassinder's have the $ to keep this in litigation for a long time. The town cannot afford this. Where is the money going to come from? Our taxes? If the Mayor and Council cannot come to some kind of agreement with the Bassinder's, we are going to be in serious financial trouble. It seems to have become personal between the mayor and David Bassinder. Perhaps if the Mayor is willing to resign, Mr. Bassinder and Martell's will drop the lawsuit. Seems to me it would be a compromise that is for the good of our town.

The Chamber knows that there are problems with Barrella and Bassinder but goes ahead and plans the event there anyway. Barrella and Bassinder don't like each other and can't squeeze their egos through the the entrance door at the same time. Juvenile egotists. The dinner is already tainted by the less than altruistic motives of the Chamber. What can be worse? Who's going to the the first to wear the big-boy pants? In this case, though, it was Barrella who chose to make the matter public, and welcome in the bad press. Barrella doesn't seem to waste an opportunity to create bad publicity for the boardwalk businesses. I do agree, though, that it seems like a huge waste of tax dollars to remarket the town if the elected officials don't at least try to keep certain issues out of the paper. I think the Martells tourist customers already know that the town doesn't want them, with the Mayor leading the chant, so I don't think they care if Martells has finally said that Barrella's not wanted. As for the locals, well, there may be some who would be happy to go someplace and know that it's "Barrella-free." Martells has a perfect right to deny entrance to whomever they like. If you don’t like it, don’t spend money in Martells. But understand: Martells has a perfect right to not admit people they don’t want, as long as they don’t discriminate based on race, creed, etc.

Barrella, on the other hand, is a public servant. He has an obligation to do what is best for the people of PPB. Barrella keeps shunning that obligation to vent his personal feelings ( in this most recent example about being dissed) to the detriment of the people he is supposed to serve. If you don’t like what Barrella is doing, then be sure to vote in November for candidates who can do a better job than the ones Barrella supports. That is what the voters of PPB did in November of 2011; this is what the voters should do again and again until all remnants of the damage Barrella has done to PPB are purged from PPB.

I have never met Mayor Barrella, but I am appealing to him to PLEASE be kind to the struggling businesses in his town. This is a time when we must show solidarity ! I am owner of Cedar Creek Campground in Bayville and know that many of my guests are visitors to all of the surrounding towns who have been hit hard by storm Sandy. It is very important, especially now, for all of these storm ravaged communities to keep a positive spin to our joint recovery. You see, if we lose our tourists (and their many dollars) to other locations it may take years, if ever to regain their business.
Often business and resident are at odds with regard to ‘ how each should behave ’, however, this is not the time to show our divisions. The future for all of us is hanging by a thread here, let us stand together and show the world “we will be ready”, for it is imperative that we continue to send a message of success and welcome to all the folks that love and enjoy, who we are, The New Jersey Shore.
