UPDATE: Farmingdale Resident Dies From Injuries in Herbertsville Road Crash

Crash also injured Freehold couple

UPDATE Jan. 26 12:33 p.m.: Jeffrey Smith, 18, of Farmingdale died Friday at 5 p.m. from injuries suffered in a crash on Herbertsville Road the previous day, a spokesperson for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office confirmed.

Smith was seriously injured and two more were transported to a local hospital following a crash on Herbertsville Road Thursday afternoon.

Ptl. Scott Brooks of the Howell Police Department reported that a little before 3 p.m. Smith was driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla south on Herbertsville Road when he unexplainably crossed the center line near the Circle A Horse Farm.

After crossing the road Smith collided with a 2001 Honda driven by 74-year-old Nicholas Spinelli of Freehold. Also in the car was Spinelli's wife Concetta.

Brooks said following the crash Smith was trapped in his car and sustained "serious head injuries." He was flow to Jersey Shore University Medical Center after being removed by members of the Ramtown and Squankum Fire Departments.

The Spinellis were taken to the same hospital by the Howell First Aid Squad with what Brooks described as "non life threatening injuries."

The crash is being investigated by Brooks and Ptl. William Bommer Jr. as well as the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Serious Crash Analysis Response Team.

Ptl. Brooks said no summonses had been issued at this time.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Howell Police Department at 732-938-4111.

Let's not forget the couple he hit. Just because their injuries are not life threatening, doesn't mean they won't be in pain for the rest of their lives.

I can explain his crossing the line....texting or changing his iPod or any other number of distractions in vehicles these days.

We should out law possession of these items in vehicles to save lives.

If even just one life is saved than your inconvience will truly be worth it.

Let's all ban together for the greater good of mankind and work toward making the highways safer.

Please..I implore you, turn in your iPods and cell phones at the next buy back day in your community.

Please don't always jump to conclusions.Unless you know with certainty don't assume. For one he was a hard working young man. He went to school all day and worked every day after school. May He rest in peace.

Let's outlaw stupid comments like yours! An 18 year old, hard working, young man just lost his life and you assume that he was talking or texting on his phone. Just a reminder for idiots like you that think everything needs to be legislated, accidents like this happend long before there were cell phones and iPods. My deepest condolences to family.

I am a volunteer EMT and was the first on the scene minutes after the accident in my own personal vehicle. He did not have an ipod or his cell phone out anywhere. Please do not assume that all accidents happen because of this. I understand your concern, and it definately is a problem in our society, but I think that the biggest concern right now is for his family at this time. I am so sorry for your loss of this beautiful young man.

Oh really? yea lets just start assuming he was texting and changing his ipod. we should out law the idiotic and ignorant comments like yours. because one im his brother and jeff has another 9 brothers and im sure the second they see your disrespectful comment ...you wouldnt like the outcome because my brother saved 3 lives by donating organs and 70 more people are to benefit from him. so next time you have something disrespectful to say you better keep it to yourself. this kid changed peoples lives especially me. dont you ever have the audacity to comment and say something so rude about this incident you illiterate disrespectful ignorant animal.

I AGREE MARIE, SOMEONE SHOULD NEVER ASSUME IF THEY DONT KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. JEFF WAS A GOOD KID, HARD WORKER. AND DID NOT MEAN TO HURT THE SPANELLI'S. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT WHERE JEFF LOST HIS LIFE. AN 18 YEAR OLD KID IS DEAD... SO DON'T ASSUME ANYTHING IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING SOOTHING TO SAY, THE BEST THING IS TO ZIP IT..HE IS MY DAUGHTERS BROTHER IN LAW And responses like that hurt..

I am devastated by this tragedy, as I knew Jeff personally. That is why I am compelled to comment here just to let everyone know that according to Jeff's family, at the scene of the accident, his cell phone was found in his pocket and he had to be cut out of his seat belt.

I knew Jeff. I went to school with him my junior year of high school. He was the greatest person anyone could have met. He had an amazing outlook on life. He was so positive about everything. I never saw him with out a smile on his face. He will be forever missed. Rest in peace Jeff. You'll be forever in my heart.

Ryan, I'm sure your grandparents are very proud of you. Yes, anger toward this poor young man that died in this accident doesn't change anything. Be thankful that your grandparents survived and pray for the family and friends who lost their loved one.

Thus far, over my 20 year teaching career, I have had the pleasure to teach many wonderful young men and women. Each one is special; each one has something to teach me-- sometimes lessons more important than the ones I teach them. Jeff "Santo" Smith was one who inspired me. He faced challenges at 18 years old that most students never have to...nor should have to face while in the midst of pursuing their education. He was bright, thoughtful, sensitive, and redefined what it means to be a hard worker-- I am sure that he made his parents so proud. I will miss seeing him every morning, and his empty desk will be hard to ignore once classes resume Monday morning. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his friends; may they find peace in knowing that he is now among the angels, and despite his absence here on earth, he is still with them...always.

I find it so offensive that an individual would make assumptions in order to slur a young man who has just lost his life, so that that individual can voice in a satirical manner their own position on gun control (totally unrelated to the article). See comment that starts with "i can explain..." My sympathies to both families connected to this accident.

There was no one closer to me than my brother, jeff. Thank you all for your loving comments. He was- and still is- a very unique person. I was pleased to hear all of his friends from school speak about him with such gratitude to have him in their lives. Life really through a curve ball, and it really stabbed us all in the heart. The other couple that were in the accident are very sweet people. Im truly sorry about their position. I am also pleased that they are still able to be held and loved by their family here on earth. I know the family may be experiencing anger, but my brother would throw himself in the way of harm before he would allow anyone else to be hurt. He had a beautiful heart.

Dear RS: I lost my brother suddenly {motorcycle crash} and it knocks the life out of you when you get the horrible news. Do not give any negative comments posted a second thought - some people are ignorant and mean and that will never change. Time will heal your heart - keep you memories close as they will bring a smile to you and tears.
