State Investigators Probing Township Records
Office of the Comptroller at town hall twice in recent weeks
The state investigators have begun looking at contracts and insurance policies of the township dating back to 2008, officials said.
The state Office of the Comptroller has twice in recent weeks visited municipal offices looking at, among other things, bidding and contract documents as well as insurance contracts dating back to 2008, Jeffry Bertrand, township administrator, said.
But Bertrand said he believes the probe was a routine check that the Comptroller performs in municipalities throughout the state.
Peter McAleer, spokesman for the Comptroller’s Office, declined to comment on the investigation.
“It is our policy not to comment on any pending or potential investigations,’’ McAleer said.
Part of the office’s duties is to uncover and expose waste or other misconduct in municipal governments throughout the state.
Investigators came to town hall on Jan. 17 and Jan. 25, Bertrand said, and asked for records concerning professional services contracts dating to 2009, insurance contracts dating to 2008 and documents related to the Silo Farm and Ridgewood Road Open Space Preservation acquisitions, Bertrand said.
“I honestly think this is a routine review,’’ Bertrand said. “I don’t think there’s anything going on.’’

When the investigative arm of the State Comptroller's office requests (1) an explanation of an apparent $400K shortfall (2) bidding & contract documents from 2009 (3) insurance contracts from 2008 (4) all documents revelant to the Silo Farm and Ridgewood Road open space properties (5) a breakdwon of $2.6M listed as "other expenses" - it is hardly a rountine check, as the Township Adminstrator says. I welcome this probe. For years myself and others have been asking for transparency & accountablility, but we have been answered with arrogrance, silence, and a refusal to review township information we are legally entitled to. This is what you get from this one-party government, who has raised our taxes more than 30% in 4 yours.

Yea ! Look how well the Federal Gov. is working with a two party gov. They shove all these laws down our throats and then exempt themselves from theses laws. They are all a bunch of crooks who dont care about the working people . We are pawns to pay for their political agenda.

If there is wrongdoing, it is sure to be uncovered in this investigation. However, let's not use this as an opportunity to bash Wall Township. Let the process unfold. And say what you will, the Wall Township Police Department is the shining jewel of our community,

I think what got me was the 'insurance' bit of it.... Seems that was the downfall of many towns. Who wants to take a guess that Federal Hill Risk Management end up in this story... Seems an awful lot of NJ towns got involved and it has become their downfall one by one.
