Still There: Abandoned Boat Now Beached
No one is willing to claim this boat, so it floats, or doesn't, and collects graffiti
It's been bouncing around the Belmar Harbor for months, unclaimed.
And for the better part of this week, it has beached itself on the south end of Maclearie Park, near Belmar Boulevard, like so much misdirected whale.
Belmar Police have said they've contacted the owner several times, to no avail, and that they're trying to get the state Department of Transportation to claim the boat because whoever moves it, owns it.
Meanwhile, the lonely boat, shunned by its owner and unwanted by both the Borough of Belmar and the State of New Jersey has become a target for local graffiti artists.
And today, Wednesday, March 20, 2013, this is where it sits.

I don't understand how the owner can just walk away. Can't someone go after the owner or bank if there is a loan on it? Treat it like an unlawfully parked car. Ticket it and call the owner into municipal court.

The story says Belmar police contacted the owner several times "to no avail". What does that mean? He blew them off?

How about the whole floating dock that washed up closer to Belmar Blvd with 4 row/sail boat hulls on it. Does anyone know it's missing? It washed up during the night of the last Nor'Easter. I saw it first on Mar 7th.

Should the boat be renamed the S.S. Minnow?
