TELL US: Did Your Wall Township Water & Sewer Bill Rise?

Residents reporting "mortgage payment-sized" bills for the last quarter of 2012

Residents all over Wall Township have reported receiving huge Water & Sewer bills for the last quarter of 2012, many in line with what homeowners would normally expect in the summer months, when water use is at an apex.

Here's an example of the reader comments from Wednesday's story on the situation:

"I went in to the Township offices yesterday to complain about the exorbitant bill. There are only two of us in a small house, no sprinkler, no pool, no kids. At a base 6,000 gal/mo there should be no overages for us. Or, if there are, they should be minimal, not twice the standard amount of the bill. We'll see where this goes. But at this point I don't trust the meter-reading equipment."

-- James Goddard

"Our bill was almost triple what it normally is. We went to the township office to inquire about it and we were told they would send someone out to double check the meter. They of course made no mention that this was a township wide issue. We did not see a meter reader although they may have come while we were at work."

-- Holly Finberg

My family's latest quarterly water bill has nearly doubled compared to this time last year. It is also nearly Five times higher than the bill that I received last quarter. So something is obviously not right. The water/sewer dept. sent somebody to re-check the meter yesterday. I was told that the meter reading is correct. There are no leaks in my house that I can detect and we haven't done anything different or out of the ordinary. I sincerely hope that the town is taking this issue seriously.

We're finding your story to be eerily similar to many residents who say the same thing: The bill is higher than last year, many times higher than last quarter (which includes the summer months) and no leaks to be found inside the house. But the more people who say so, the better the chances are that something gets done. Thanks for speaking up!

Our bill was $500 this quarter! This is at least $200 more than usual! I was worried that we have a leak but haven't been able to locate any problems.

My last water bill was easily 5 times more than any other quarter. Without a viable explanation from the town, I refuse to pay. Water dept personnel agreed and directed me to pay the flat water/sewer bill. I still have yet to see or hear from anyone from the Water dept regarding the excessive, and obviously erroneous bill. Are they hoping that we will just pay?? Not this taxpayer. There is clearly a problem that the town is refusing to confront.

Our bill was also extremely high. When I went to look into it I was told "It was estimated" and they would send someone out to read the meter. They did and the subsequent bill was accurate. My question is. If we spent money on "Drive-by" meter readings, why do we have "estimates"? Sounds like someone is goofing off, instead of doing their job.

Our bill was also double this quarter. The town came out to check the meter and the line from the house to the street for a leak but everything was fine. I hope they figure out the problem soon.

My water bill didn't jump drastically, but I just discovered that for the last 3 quarter's it has risen consistently about $10 each quarter? Why? I went from $186 to $200. In the winter?
My neighbor told me her bill was $800!!! Something is very wrong!

My bill was 2 1/2 times the normal. We did replace the pool liner last year but that was in June. Is that just coming up now? The bill is still too much for the winter months if you take that charge out. They came out and re-read my meter and said it was correct. What have they been doing since June?

In Septembers billing we got hit with a bill of $1260. Our normal bill is usually the minimum amount due to the fact that we are two people living in a small house with no pool or sprinkler system. We called and complained. The water company came out and checked the meter and said the meter was correct and that there was nothing they could do about the amount due. We had our pipes check for leaks and a plumber found no leaks in our system. I was outraged and no matter what I said to the water company it did not matter. My last two water bills have been higher than the minimum but not nearly as astronomically high as the one in September. I feel like we were robbed out of our money and there was no way to dispute the charges. I don't know how they are going to fix the wrong doings that have already occurred. After weeks of fighting with the water company with no success we paid the bill. I hope this round of complaints, now that its happening to more people, gets better results.
