Thousands of Sandy Victims Remain in Hotel Housing

FEMA currently estimates 2,790 households remain in either hotels or motels throughout the state following Hurricane Sandy.

Thousands of victims of Hurricane Sandy remain temporarily housed in hotels and motels throughout the state, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials said Thursday, but the number continues to decline as families find permanent housing solutions.

FEMA held a conference call late Thursday morning to announce an extension of its Transitional Sheltering Assistance as well as to provide an update of the agency’s goal to move Sandy victims away from transitional housing into more long-term temporary solutions.

Currently, 2,790 households throughout New Jersey are still living in hotels and motels, FEMA Individual Assistance Branch Director Christy Grant said, though that number is expected to decline significantly by this weekend. According to Grant, approximately 1,300 households have relayed to FEMA that they have been able to secure alternative housing solutions and will be moving out of the hotel and motel rooms some have spent the last few months living in by as late as this Saturday.

Roughly 1,100 households that remain in hotels and motels have been granted another two-week extension, one of several FEMA has issued in the aftermath of Sandy, and are not expected to move out of their transitional shelters until the end of the month. The decision to provide the extension came following an assessment of need and conference between FEMA and the State, FEMA Spokesman Marty Bahamonde said.

Bahamonde noted that the numbers of households both staying in the TSA program and leaving it are in a constant state of flux, accounting for the current discrepancy in total figures. Each day hundreds of households continue to check out of hotels and motels as they’ve been able to make repairs to their homes, find an adequate rental, or move in to FEMA’s temporary housing program.

In all, more than 5,400 households deplaced by Hurricane Sandy have stayed in 430 hotels throughout the state, Grant said. The average stay for impacted families has been 25 days and while the need for shelter still remains, Grant said FEMA continues to work towards finding better temporary housing for those who still need it.

“It’s an assistance program, not a housing solution,” Grant said of the TSA program.

Most of the households making use of the TSA program come from Atlantic, Monmouth and Ocean Counties, some of the hardest hit areas where rebuilding efforts continue. FEMA has spend more than $17 million on hotel and motel stays alone for Sandy victims, Grant said.

FEMA continues to look for temporary housing solutions throughout the Jersey Shore area. One building with 45 units is currently housing Sandy victims at Fort Monmouth and by the end of the month a second building with 48 units is expected to open along with 44 units in 22 fort duplexes.

The disaster response agency continues to look for potential pad sites for its mobile homes and has identified about 85 potential sites in trailer parks throughout the area.

Grant said the goal isn’t to force Sandy victims out of hotel rooms, but rather to help them find more suitable accommodations until they’re able to get back on their feet and return home. She urged residents still struggling with Sandy-related housing issues to reach out to FEMA by calling its hotline at 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585.

How about people who did not lose their homes but lost their vehicles instead? I do understand the absolute importance of getting the people who did lose their homes and all their belongings the assistance they need but, just because we did not lose everything we also deserve some sort of assistance. FEMA has turned us down, we do not qualify for an SBA loan, where do we go for help? I have always felt it is extremely important to give back to your community, I was a volunteer firefighter for over 11 years retiring a couple of years ago. It's just so very frustrating needing a small amount of help but always being told “sorry we CANNOT help you”. Who the heck CAN help us? Sorry if this seems minimal to those who lost so much more than we did, I also think those people deserve the help they need but, we deserve help also.

We are all going to need help. Wait til the taxes go up to pay for this disaster. No one will be helping us. They are talking huge increases. When we bought our house we decided we didn't want to live on the water or too close to it as the risk of flooding is great. Now we have to pay to replace what was lost? The thought of the taxes going up is sickening. Will we have to give up paying for our healthcare to pay the additional taxes? We could lose our savings and our home because of this. Jersey is a State of low income, part time jobs, unless of course, you work for the State. "Help", there is none and no relief in sight unless we can sell our house and run from Jersey as fast as we can.

The median family income in Union Beach is $65,000 - I'd hardly say we're in the 1%. The shorefront towns are not exclusively the 1%, there are a lot of middle classers here. Plus, not all the flood damage took place at the shore. Many rivers and streams also flooded beyond their usual amount. As for those pesky one percenters, most have paid for flood insurance and deserve to have their policies honored....the max is $250,000 anyway, hardly the value of those homes. I would also wager a good guess that they aren't attempting to avail themselves of free food and the like. This class warfare crap has to end.

Amen, Bill.

Commonman, how are charities a fraud and waste of money? What proof do you have, other than the fact that people aren't getting straight up checks from these charities (which...for the record...giving money away isn't entirely the right thing to do either. How can you prove it will be spent properly)?

I have to admit I got some volunteers from Belmar to help me for a few hours after the storm to rid my basement of my tenants junk. They were a great help and I thank
them very much. As for any other charities; MIA. Save your money. Charity begins at home. Red Cross, what a load of crap. I feel sorry for the old farts down in Ocean Beach that lost their homes. I got a call today from the SBA about running out of time to get an SBA loan. FEMA and SBA total waste of tax payers money.

charlie, there was a group of Baptists from OK who stayed at the New Monmouth Baptist Church who helped many of the people in Port Monmouth,Belford,Leonardo and probably other places as well. They even had a shower trailer so people for people who had no other place to shower. There was a huge tent across the street in St.Mary's parking lot, distriuting clothing and other things,as well as serving food. There were some organizations that did a lot of good.

I know there are stories on both sides, good and bad and the inconsistencies with fema are bad, i feel for everyone who had to go thru this whether you lost everything including your home like myself, or your car or anything its painful. Personally I can't say enough or be more grateful to all the people and groups who have come to my aid, from the Mennonites and Amish christian aid groups to those driving around offering hot food and just a kind word. I'm certainly not a 1%'er and bought my home in a nice blue collar bayshore community BECAUSE thats what my family could afford to try and raise our family. good luck all

If you took all the salaries, all the benifits, all the pensions of all the FEMA employees, we could have bailed out the Sandy victims 10 fold with 1 USA disater fund provided by We the People. More government is NEVER the answer. Cut FEMA Now.

The American Red Cross Sandy Recovery Program has recently launched a program with the goal of Sustainable Long Term Housing to move people out of hotels and into more permanent living. Even if not FEMA eligible, people can access these services which include: assignment of a case manager, provide money (up to $6,500) to be used for 1st month's rent, last month's rent, security deposit, application fees, background checks, utility deposit, assistance with back overdue utility payments to access utilities in new home, reconnection fees for utilities, moving costs, brokerage fees, home repairs with NJ licensed contractors and more. Verification of need and verification that appropriate housing has been selected are required. When the process is complete, American Red Cross cuts a check payable to the new landlord, but gives the check to the individual to hand over to the landlord. For those who are registered with FEMA, call them and ask to be referred to the American Red Cross Sustainable Housing Program. For those not registered with FEMA, register and ask for this help at that time. Good Luck!

Have you noticed Congress has not removed the 10% penalty for taking out money out of a retirement fund to rebuild thier homes, like they did for the people in the south when Katrina hit?
Insurance payments are so slow for many people and they need to get back into thier homes and this would help.

it is very unbelievable to me that there are several hundred apartment units that lay vacant near fort monmouth, (formaly used to house military families) these units are in ready to occupy condition, or nearly so. what's the hold up, washinton & fema? there should be no delay in placing those families in those apartments immediatly! shame, shame, shame!

Temporarily Homeless from Highlands: FEMA just extended their hotel program another two weeks, and only half the people in our hotel got approved to stay the extra two weeks...we were of the ones that did not... I called FEMA & said, "Our house is totally gutted, why would you kick us out, and not other people?" They said, "We gave you 'rental assistance' money of $2,300 after the storm, you can use that if you want to stay longer." .....

you may want to use some of the ,money for a gun for protection from the government. this state and the US are headed in the wrong direction. 40 years ago the country was better, utilities were more dependable, police only beat up the bad guys,, politicians had compassion for the average family, there was an average family, people smiled and worked. we are now a welfare country of selfish people draining the americanism out of the average family. Better to be Amish and take care of your own. hold on to what you have left before FEMA sends you a bill for services rendered. I would like to compare the housing money for displaced victims to the perdium spent on all the FEMA and insurance adjusters etc.. 2500 workers for 60 days at $120/day = $18M. FEMA told me they had 5000 people working on thisdisaster and I used 1/2 that. follow the $$$$$$$$$
