Three Hurt When Man Mistakes Gas Pedal For Brakes

Two pedestrians struck at Route 35 gas station

Three people suffered minor injuries and one was taken to an area hospital when a Subaru wagon careened out of control at a Route 35 gas station on Monday afternoon, police said.

The driver of the Subaru, described by police only as a 64-year-old man, accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake while pulling up to a gas pump at the Gulf station at Allaire Road around 2:30 p.m. The mistake caused a collision with the 2005 Jeep SUV parked directly in front around 2:30 p.m. The Jeep consequently hit two pedestrians, Sgt. Joseph Wilbert said.

The front seat passenger of the Jeep reported minor injuries, but refused medical treatment. The Jeep’s driver, who left the vehicle prior to the crash to speak with the station attendent, also refused treatment. The attendent, however, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township, for treatment, Wilbert said.

The driver of the Subaru was cited for careless driving, Wilbert said.
