The township has a new emergency notification system, and officials are asking residents to register with the new vendor to receive alerts.

The township has dropped CodeRed, the town’s previous emergency alert vendor, in favor of a Mays Landing company, Global Connect.

“It’s going to give us a lot more flexibility,’’ Mayor Jeffrey Foster said.

Foster said the change also should save the township a significant amount of money. CodeRed cost $15,500 a year and put a cap on the number of minutes the township could use the system, Foster said.

Global Connect will cost the town $6,500 a year, with unlimited minutes. The town contracted with the company for five years. The first year is free, he said.

“We’re going to be able to use it for water main breaks and other emergencies – things the community needs to know about,’’ Foster said.

In order to receive emergency communications from the township, however, residents are being asked to register with the new system, even if you were already registered with CodeRed.

Registration can be completed through the Wall Police website at www.wallpolice.org. A link to the Global Connect registration page can be found on the right side of the police homepage.

Foster said that although the town would not be charged by the minute with GlobalConnect, the system would only be used in cases of emergency. 

Examples of emergency information that the system would be used for are:

• Drinking water contamination
• Utility outage
• Evacuation notice
• Missing person
• Fire
• Flood
• Bomb Threat
• Hostage Situation
• Chemical Spill or Gas Leak

“CodeRed was great, and we needed it through the hurricane and things like that,’’ Foster said. “But the Global Connect offers us more and for less money. The only thing is that everyone is going to have to re-signup.’’
