Wall's Taxes A Little Above Average

Wall Township residents pay slightly less for municipal services, more for schools and about average for county services than the 566 towns in the state, according to a new analysis.

Wall residents paid an average of $8,397.76 in 2012 in local taxes, just a tick more than the average for municipalities in the state, according to a new Star Ledger analysis.

In 2012, the newspaper's analysis of the 566 towns in the state showed the average tax bill was 1.7 percent more last year, as compared with 2011. Wall residents' average bill rose slightly higher, at 2 percent, according to the analysis.

The average Wall Township tax bill is divided into three categories: county, municipal and school taxes. The portion of a Wall resident's county tax was roughly in line with the state average: $1,434.73 went to the county, compared with the state average of $1,425.45.

Wall residents pay slighly less than the state average in municipal taxes, however. In 2012, residents paid $2,050.07 in local taxes, compared with the state average of $2,324.66.

The school tax bill, however, is higher for Wall residents than the state average -- $4,912.96 compared with the state average of $4,120.16.

Wall's overall tax bill puts it about the middle of the pack of Monmouth County towns, according to the newspaper's data. Statewide, Wall's taxes place it 369th of the state's 566 municipalities, according to the data.

The Star-Ledger noted that property taxes statewide rose 2.4 percent in 2011, the first year Christie’s 2 percent cap was in effect. But the trend of lower increases could be reversed because of Hurricane Sandy costs, according to the report.
