An abandoned boat in the Shark River Harbor has collected graffiti and is the subject of a stand-off of sorts between the state Department of Transportation and Belmar Police.

Friday: The small boat abandoned in the Shark River Harbor just off Belmar Boulevard on Friday appears to have beached itself along the shoreline on the south side of Belmar's Maclearie Park.

Still no word from police or the DOT on when The Spain -- so-named for the graffiti that now graces its hull -- might be plucked from the harbor.

Prevously:

It's an eyesore that's just getting worse.

An abandoned boat, left in the harbor of the Shark River just off Belmar Boulevard, has been riding the tides for months, sometimes on its side, sometimes upright. And now it has attracted the attention of local graffiti artists who have practiced their craft on its hull.

Belmar officials say that the owner has been contacted numerous times, to no avail, and that the state Department of Transportation has been contacted to remove the boat, also with no results.

Belmar police say that they want to be rid of it, but if they remove it, the boat becomes the town's problem. If the DOT removes it, it's theirs.

That's where it stands, and Belmar Police say they will keep pressuring the DOT to collect the boat.

Looks like that it only has water in the hull. Maybe it could be pumped out so the boat can float again?

Why does Belmar police believe it is the responsibilty of DOT?

Presumably, boat traffic falls under transportation? If I remember right, with drawbridges, the boats have the right of way in NJ over autos. But I could be wrong?

hopefully the engine and the gas tank is exposed to the water so the marine environment can continue to get its rear slammed from more pollution. j offs

The owner should be fined until they have it removed

I think if a legal proceeding is started now against the owner the boat will be moved and then the eyesore can be removed from the river. There is no incentive for the owner to move his boat if he is not being charged fees.

It's actually kind of amusing. Is it possible none of the policing agencies want to be the first to issue a summons since then they own the problem?

It's like the coaster in the ocean in Seaside. It's a reminder of Hurricane Sandy. Lol!

Someone should put an American flag on it.

Should it be flown upside down?
I wonder what it looks like under the water in the Shark River Inlet? Who knows, there could be sunken boats and cars under there. I may have to break out the dive gear this spring.

Move the boat to the Marina, charge the owner for all expenses, and if he doesn't come forward, arrest him.

If,

The owner possessed Insurance, on his former vessel, filing a claim of Loss. Then, he's been compensated. That, may/would explain Ones position of Disinterest in the vessel?

Take it to the owners property and dump it in its driveway or front yard.Let them look at the eye sore. Then give him a bill for the removal fees

That boat has been in that area for along time. I live right by it. Long before sandy came ashore I wondered who owned it. Althought with that boat being up and down as much as it has sooner or later its going to get a hole in it and be sunk there. Or the fuel and oil is going to leak out and add to the fuel and oil tanks already stuck in Shark River.
