Women Voters Key for Obama's Re-election

The First Lady's speech highlights how, in a 50-50 nation, the narrative that wins this fight may win the White House.

CHARLOTTE, NC — President Obama "believes that women are more than capable of making our own choices about our bodies and our health care,” first lady Michelle Obama said during her Tuesday speech to the Democratic National Convention. "That's what my husband stands for."

It was a continuation of a consistent message from women at all levels of the Democratic party: this election is about the government’s right to control your body.

Earlier that day, just a few blocks away from where Mrs. Obama spoke, Gov. Nikki Haley made the Republican pitch.

“Let me tell you about women. Women are extremely smart,” the first female governor of South Carolina said. “They care about a lot more than contraception.”

Those two arguments—that the 2012 presidential election is about women’s rights, and that women’s rights are a distraction from economic factors that affect American families—have been made again and again by supporters at every level in Charlotte this week and in Tampa last week. Much has been said about 2012 being a grand debate over the federal budget, but in a 50-50 nation, the narrative that wins this fight may win the White House.

Delegates in Lockstep

Women delegates in Charlotte and Tampa, who are more often than not leaders in their hometowns, are consistent in their messaging.

“This war on women is absolutely phony,” said RNC delegate from Connecticut Pat Longo last week. “It’s strictly to distract from issues of debt, deficit, and spending.”

“Wisconsin women need to realize that we need to worry about what's going on for our kids and our grandkids,” said Patty Reiman, an RNC delegate from Whitefish Bay, Wi.

On the streets of Uptown Charlotte, female physiology is front and center: Planned Parenthood supporters wear pink shirts everywhere, and Austin delegate Heather Ross went so far as to walk the streets of Charlotte with a pink felt “uterus” stitched into her ballcap.

Asked what American women need from this election, delegate Grace Carrington from Coral Springs, Md. said, “Let us make our decisions for our bodies. Period.”

Miami Democratic Delegate Bonnie Weiner stressed that the most important issue for her was that, “We could have our most basic and important rights taken from us.”

The Diminishing Number of Undecided Women

ABC News released a poll on Tuesday suggesting Republicans were cutting into Obama’s advantage among women. Michelle Obama's speech, stressing that "at the end of the day, my most important title is still 'mom-in-chief'" was no doubt designed to make up some of that lost ground.

But regardless of the affect of last night's speech, the army of businesswomen, moms and sisters on either side may continue to sway voters back and forth for the next 60 days.

As voting women pick sides, the best remaining opportunities may lie with women like Connecticut Representative Terrie Wood.

“I firmly believe social issues should be left to the individual and not to the government to decide,” Wood told a Patch editor in Tampa.

“I find a lot of women in our community register as Democrats because they’re pro-choice and they support gay rights. Well, most of us [conservative women in Connecticut] do too.”

Wood is a Republican delegate and a firm Romney supporter. The question is how women who share her conflicted feelings will vote.

Did She or Did She Not Sit In Jeremiah Wrights Church? Did Jeremiah preach white hate or not? Oh and remember too people, by her own words she was never proud of her country even when we landed men on the moon, or achieve other greatness. No, she had to wait until her husband was running for president to be proud of America!

@Curt Carnes. The important question is: Did Mitt sit in a Mormon Moronic church? Gawd almighty there is not a hint of real Christianity in Mormonism. LOL! They claim an angel came to earth 100 years ago and gave a whole new version of the bible to a failed fiction writer. The stupidest thing is no one has ever seen those fabled gold plates. LOL! Mormonism is no different than Tom Cruise's Scientology - both of them are moronic. You ought to research Mormonism. I once did research it because I considered converting to it. The whole basis for that “religion” is unbelievable.
I could care less what Michelle does. She is not running for office. Perhaps you should compare bleach bottle blonde Ann Romney to Michelle. Michelle has worked for a living; Ann Romney is both an accomplished Rodeo Road shopper and do-er lunch with the girls.

Women are deeply worried about the economy, record unemployment and a $16 Trillion federal debt level. Their children's futures are at stake and no amount of tax increases can change this bleak picture. The entitlements must be reformed and Obama lacks the leadership skills to change the direction of this country. The only war on women are the failed economic policies of Obama.

Sue, a better life for your kids DOES mean paying attention to finances, job opportunities, the deficit, living under a balanced budget (both in your household AND in the government), not taking on more credit than you can handle. 'Social issues' don't have nearly as much impact on the well being of your child as economic issues. And no amount of food stamps provide a solution to a weak economy.

And some women are concerned about healthcare. When you are given healthcare through your employer, thats the plan you get. Like it or not. If you don't like it, you can refuse it and go buy your own to the tune of approximately $1800 per month for a family of four. That is your only choice. In the State of NJ, if you are insured through a policy offered by your employer, you cannot go out and buy additional insurance. Its one or the other, take what really isn't the greatest, or try to figure out a way to pay for a better policy on your own. It is against the law in NJ, because no insurance carrier wants to have the fight of being considered primary. While I am not thrilled with the state of the economy, with a spouse battling cancer, my concerns right now lie with his healthcare.

Paul,

If I can jump in for a second, I'll make two points.

1) Frankly, in my view, the guilt-by-association argument against Obama, or his wife (especially invoking Jeremiah Wright four years after the Obamas left the church), is pretty tired.

2) To that point, if I'm a member of a church where the pastor rails against gay marriage, to use one example, does that mean that I am also anti-gay marriage, or that I should be held accountable for my pastor's views? It's a crude analogy, but the same principle.

Let's be honest, even as an Obama supporter, I can acknowledge there's plenty of things to knock him for—especially if you're a conservative. Go after his policies, his failure to fully restore the economy, etc., etc. Do we really need to fall back on this tired (and baseless) "he (or his wife for that matter) hates America" attack? If the best evidence you can muster to buttress your argument is a paper the First Lady wrote in college (which I've read part of and says nothing about hating white people), or his membership in a church where the pastor was a nut and a jerk, I think people need to rethink their attack strategy.

I'm white and I dislike white people who put their dog on the roof of a car and drive for 12 hours while the dog defecates all over the crate and car, then those same white people say the dog liked it.

@Rob – If I ever sat in a church where a sermon like that was being delivered I’d walk out in the middle of the sermon, and long before the press got ahold of it and it became an embarrassment to me. I understand Barack sat in that man’s church for one or two decades, and used Jeremiah to marry him to Michelle.

Now look Paul, I don’t know about you, but when I go to church (and I do that a lot) I spend the better part of that Sunday, along with the rest of the week, contemplating what the preacher said and trying to live the life the preacher talked about!

Do you really wish to wash this bad spot in Obama’s life away? Do you wish to rewrite history? Is it easier to say it newer happened? Oh let's forget about it!

Something tells me you aren't really hearing what your pastor is saying if you are worrying about what everyone else is doing wrong. Try looking inward that's what religion is all about. Boy that must be good news for the pregnant ladies that are having trouble eating right and not drinking or smoking and going out parting all the time when they are carrying that no life fetus.

In fact why even bother to go the hospital for the birth, if as you suggest life doesn’t start till you pop out. Just wait till that fetus bounces off the floor and becomes a real person, and then go to the hospital!

Michelle Obama's speech was amazing, even moreso considering she wrote it herself as opposed to Ann Romney's disjointed, pedestrian, and uncomfortable speech. Michelle is the only First Lady in my lifetime (pushing 40) that has a character of her own and is smarter, by leaps and bounds, than the muppets that have constituted our First Lady's since the 70's. Michelle oozes class.

Highlights of last night:

-"And he believes that when you've worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity . you do not slam it shut behind you . you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed." - Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention

-"Pyromaniacs shouldn't blame the firefighter," in reference to Republicans blaming Obama for the...well everything - Mayor of Minneapolis, R. T. Rybak

-A video played as a tribute to the late great Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) — using clips from Rommey’s losing 1994 campaign against Kennedy for the Senate. This amazing smack down by the DNC highlighted Mitt’s duplicity, which knows no bounds.

-"If Mitt was Santa Claus, he'd fire the reindeer and outsource the elves. Mitt Romney has so little economic patriotism that even his money needs a passport." - Ted Strickland

Okay idiot. First off it was the Social Security Administration not DHS. Secondly it was 104K rounds not 1.4 Billion. Get your facts straight. They purchased those rounds for their investigative arm (the people who go after people who abuse the system). They are authorized to make arrests and carry a firearm. It works out to approximately 600 rounds per person. That is not uncommon (ask any police department). The majority of the rounds are used on the range for practice and certification.

@Great Hoax. I do not agree with your political points against Obama but I am correcting your misconception about blacks were enslaved and whites were indentured servants. The first American slaves were whites not Africans – for example, Oliver Cromwell had his political opponents captured and sold as slaves in America. King James Ii and Charles I enslaved many of the Irish and English and had them also sold to America. Later English and Irish poor were sent not as slaves but as indentured poor. Those who were sent to Philadelphia had a decent chance of survival. Those sent to the Chesapeake tobacco plantations quickly died of malaria. Plantations owners then discovered African slaves were better resistant to malaria and for that reason the trade in Africans as slaves began.
Up until the early 19th century Europeans were being stolen from the coast of the Mediterranean, along the Atlantic up to the Baltic Sea and sold to a hellish life in the Islamic Levant’s slave markets. America’s first naval battle was to free American seamen enslaved in Tripoli. By the way, it was the British who led the effort to abolish the slave trade

Tragically, slavery is still going in parts of this world. It needs to be ended.

Mrs. Obama's speech was quite impressive, but surely neither she nor her husband have ever truly been "down with the struggle." In Chicago, Michelle attended one of the city's first magnet schools for gifted children - the same type of school her husband's position on public education does not support. She even had the benefit of a stay-at-home mother. Barack Obama attended an elite college prep school in Hawaii and is the son of college educated parents. I would hazard to guess that the "Black" experience of the Obama's is a lot "Whiter" than they would like for anyone to know.

Then there was the mortgage crisis and the big insurance agencies and investment firms who had to quickly get acquired or else were on the verge of bankruptcy in 2008. The sharp decline during the last 4 months of 2008 was due to the global economic meltdown and the need for Wall Street speculators to dump their reserves asap.

Here we go. We should have let GM go bankrupt and thrown whole states into unemployment. AND let's make sure we destroyed every business that depended on the auto industry. NO OUTSIDE MONEY WAS COMING FORWARD TO RESCUE THE AUTO INDUSTRY.

850,000 manufacturing workers plus 1.8 million workers at auto dealerships. Yea, let's just put them on food stamps and unemployment. Yes, that would have been sooo much better.

I don't have GM stock. I have no problem.

Laura,
I read these posts and occasionally I comment to help someone like you understand the correct facts. If Obama had not taken the unusual action of investing our tax dollars into GM, GM would have gone into a "Restructuring under the Bankruptcy Laws". GM would NOT have gone out of business. BUT all contracts and debt owed by GM would have been renegotiated. The Unions did not want that. Obama bailed out the Union not GM. GM has a cost structure that is not competitive long term. GM must get out from under the Union contracts. They will do this by slowly moving jobs overseas. Unfortunate!! If GM was Restructured under the Bankruptcy laws, GM would be far more healthy today and jobs much more secure. Instead the US taxpayers own GM stock which will remain a bad investment until the find a way to eliminate high Union contracts. Unbelievable poor government policy in action.

Good for you, Laura. Glad your investments are safe. Why are you OK with the power holders in this country picking winners and losers? Why would it not have been OK for GM to file for bankruptcy like many other industries have? So long as union employees were rescued at the expense of hardworking taxpayers in this country all is well? GM stock is in the toilet. Why does that matter? Because so long as the stock is circling the drain, the bailout "investment" which our President promised us will never be realized. BTW...if you haven't read the news....whole states are knee deep in unemployment. Throwing taxpayer dollars at companies in financial trouble is not the answer particularly when the only reason to do so is to boost a failing president's popularity at election time.

Look at what happened to to the GM plant Janesville, Wisconsin: Tax payer money went INTO GM in AMERICA -- and went OUT the door to the GM plant in China's Jilin Province.

Well said. The only salvation for the country and GM was failure! Other manufacturers would have "picked up the slack" and, become stronger in the process. The bailout only allowed the weak to survive. We have only set ourselves up for the next bailout.
GM took the bailout money and invested heavily in China. As if China doesn't own enough of our country!

When will America wake up and realize that they are all the same (with the exception of a small few). They are all for big government and doing only what it takes to get elected and then re-elected. They all want to tax us to the point that we have nothing left and work to support the government and line their pockets. There is a class warfare going on - those in the party and everyone else - not unlike the past Soviet Union. We need change and I mean real change - no more lifetime politicians so they can milk us dry.

Over 27 times as fast. Metaphorically speaking, if you are driving in the right lane doing 65 MPH and a car rockets past you in the left lane.
27 times faster, it would be doing 7,555 MPH! So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive? Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in 34 months -- so you'll have about 2 months to come up with an answer. Every statement in this email is factual and directly attributable to Barrack Hussein Obama. Is President Obama’s spending an “inferno,” as Mitt Romney claims, or a binge that “never happened” as an analysis touted by the White House concluded? We judge that both of those claims are wrong on the facts.

The truth is that the nearly 18 percent spike in spending in fiscal 2009 — for which the president is sometimes blamed entirely — was mostly due to appropriations and policies that were already in place when Obama took office.

That includes spending for the bank bailout legislation approved by President Bush. Annual increases in amounts actually spent since fiscal 2009 have been relatively modest. In fact, spending for the first seven months of the current fiscal year is running slightly below the same period last year, and below projections.

Never confuse a Conservative with facts.

I'm glad that you've informed all of us uninformed that Obama controls the price of oil. Guess you aren't involved with the stock market and futures. Try turning off Fox and actually using your brain.

OK, since we gotta have one anyway, we might as well have one who admit that if you promise to do something and it doesn't happen, you'll just step aside. Why allow this talk that 'things are worse than we thought, so we need 4 more years.' Yep, things are worse now that BO has held the reigns for four years....and who can really point to anything getting really significantly better at all? Even if just one or two things got better he'd have shot. I'm continually scratching my heads wondering what African Americans feels he has really accomplished for them....as I see it, their chances just get worse and worse as unemployment remains high and unchanged. I wonder if most African Americans around his south side chicago neighborhoods feel like the American dream is even a remote possibility for them? Fully 1/3 of blacks live in poverty in Chicago, and the number is rising. Yet they vote strongly for Obama. I'm wishing for a small, black Republican to step up and show them the light.

By voluntarily inactivating their licenses, they avoid a requirement to take continuing education classes and pay hundreds of dollars in annual fees. Both could practice law again if they chose to do so.

Somebody wrote that Michell Obama held a job...
Michelle Obama populated a 'position' as 'Executive Director of Community and External Affairs' at the University of Chicago Medical Center. While Mr. Obama was a member of the Illinois State Senate, Michelle landed her position at the U. of C. Medical Center in 2002 at a starting salary of $116,000/yr and subsequently received a raise to $121,000/yr.
In the November election of 2004, Mr. Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate representing Illinois and Michelle Obama was promoted to 'Executive Director of Community and External Affairs' at the University of Chicago Medical Center and received a pay increase to $317,000/yr. at the beginning of 2005 directly after her husband's election to the Senate.
Michelle Obama reduced her work schedule to part time in early 2007 and took a pay cut to $103,600/yr. for a 20-hour work week.
In 2008, Michelle Obama took an 'unpaid leave of absence' to work on Mr. Obama's presidential campaign but still mysteriously received $62,709 from the hospital. (How's that work?)
As a result of Mr. Obama's win in the November, 2008, presidential election, Michelle Obama's resignation from the U. of C. Medical Center was announced in January, 2009. Michelle Obama's position was so important to the U. of C. Medical Center that they thought it would be impossible to fill so they dropped the position.
That's work? Where can I get a job like that?

If any of you out here in cyber land take a look at what is going on in the country without your "rose colored" glasses you will see that this country is in a bad way. We are living in a country that has just surpassed 16 trillion dollars in debt and with debt like that there is NO WAY we are ever going to pay some of that down without some kind of reform to social programs. We need to take a look at a way that Welfare,Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid,Food Stamps, Obamacare, Free Cellphones and other things like this can be streamlined. Where in any other time in our nations history have you seen Welfare held up as a badge of honor? I am not looking down my nose at anyone who needs help with food stamps because there are people who use these programs as a hand up and not a life long program. We as citizens of this country are allowing freedoms that our ancestors fought and died for being taken away little by little. Cameras at every corner, blimps flying over our skies whats next? Now, let's take a look at jobs...this administration gave money to GM to keep them a float and here they are again teetering again on the brink of going under. They are going to their retirees and telling them that they are going to buy them out at a lump sum and be done with them. Does this sound like a company that is on solid financial ground to you? Then look at Solyndra they took all of that money and then filed for bankruptcy. We as a country cannot keep up with spending like this. We as a country need to say STOP THE SPENDING!!! We as a country need to tell this administration that we do not want to be like Europe and we do not want to be in the financial mess of Greece! Please I don't care whether you are a Republican or a Democrat all I ask is that you take off you Republican or Democrat colored glasses and look long a hard at the TRUE issues that this country faces not just the issues that the party bosses want you to think are the issues ( to be continued)

Lines will form, services will be rationed, qualified MD's have already pledged to seek early retirement, the bureaucratic nightmare of anything RUN by the government will overburden the healthcare delivery system and we will be left with more expensive, less efficient and lower quality healthcare. We do not have a healthCARE crisis in this nation. Ask Canadians crossing into our border states in an effort to receive timely treatment by some of the finest physicians in the world at some of the most advanced hospitals in the world. What we have is an INSURANCE crisis. What is the purpose of insurance? It is to protect your assets in a catastrophic incident (house fire, car accident, etc.). We've GROWN health insurance to include EVERYTHING from well care check-ups to mandatory contraception. Scale it back, open up purchasing products across state lines, allow for catastrophic policies and I think we'll see more prudent use of the system with lower premiums to the policyholders.

How about the great insurance companies. Some which benefit from things like flood insurance programs, medicaid, medicare. How about the great Congressional benefit packages for our congressmen. You name me an industry and I will name you and government program from which they benefit. Let's see. How about the internet. You know. The one that vice president said that he invented? Without government to have a need for it and pay for it at the beginning, there would not be an internet. Question - I do not think he is a Muslim, but I think he is apologetic for the manner in which America came to be. His policies are about making the international playing field even. He has a need to knock America down a peg because being a world super power is not "fair" to other nations who are struggling. The problem is that to accept his philosophy one must come from the perspective that America does more harm than good on the international stage. Being the child of immigrant parents who fled their country during WWII, that's a hard sell for me. You see my parents have American soldiers to thank for their existence. Being a volunteer with the Red Cross, the US is inevitably the first on scene at disaster sites. Without our wealth, without our industrial spirit, without our technology and without our readiness ability, we would not be the international "go to" in these types of events. We're not perfect, but a day does not go by that I am not proud to be an American.

That's the best argument you can put forward ? I don't like the man because his black.
Did it ever cross your tiny mind that I'm black ?

A good read for you to learn something about yourself. Pay particular attention to the last paragraph.

"Psychological projection or projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person subconsciously denies his or her own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, usually to other people. Thus, projection involves imagining or projecting the belief that others originate those feelings."

"Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

An example of this behavior might be blaming another for self failure. The mind may avoid the discomfort of consciously admitting personal faults by keeping those feelings unconscious, and by redirecting libidinal satisfaction by attaching, or "projecting," those same faults onto another person or object."

My other HUGE beef is the so-called "war" in Iraq and Afghanistan. This military operation is 100% wrong. Like Vietnam, you CANNOT conquer the Afghan people. It is a historical and military fact.

Why do so many women blindly vote Democrat and especially Obama? Is it because he spends more money than any other president in history? Is it because he says it is ok for you to kill a baby before it is born no matter what the circumstances. Most likely because you slept around and did not use proper protection.Or is it because he wants your insurance company to cover your birth control so you can continue to do whatever you want? Or is it because the media tries to make him look good no matter what he does? Or is it because woman have been hurt more by the economic collapse than men have? I used to blindly vote democrat too until one day I woke up to a world of high taxes and no accountability. This is my advice to all the ladies out there. Mitt Romney understands the economy and he wants people to work not live off the guberment. The republicans believe in lower taxes and less government. The democrats want more government and more reliance on them. Anyway think for yourselves before you automatically select the guy or gal with a (D) after his or her name.

That you talk about "sleeping around" shows that you don't care one whit for "babies", what you care about is punishing those you regard as "dirty sluts" -- which means everyone of childbearing age in this country who becomes pregnant whether by "irresponsibility" as you call it, or contraceptive failure, or rape, or incest...or who has a tubal pregnancy that can't possibly result in a baby, or is carrying a dead or dying fetus. Well most women until early 2008 had never even heard of Obama.
They voted for a charismatic guy with absolutely no real-world experience of any kind who talked about social programs and warm, fuzzy 'change.' Unfortunately, most of us women don't pay very much attention to the economy, our government, or even our household checkbooks (example, if we did, so many households would not be under water on their mortgages). We barely skim the surface in seeking knowledge of finances and economics. IMHO - This country is in 16 trillion dollars (I repeat 16 trillion dollars) of debt that no one Rep or Dem will EVER solve. These 535 members of the Congress and the Senate are the causes for this debt. They take good care of themselves, wake up they are the "Good Old Boys Club", they like it just the way it is. Do anyone of you really think that they are working for you? Obamacare or whatever you want to call
it, they EXEMPTED themselves from it, but they tell you that it is good for the American People, and perhaps it is, but if it is, why are they not part of it? I'll tell you why, its because they ALWAYS take care of themselves first, and pass the rest of their BS to the American People. Where in this country can you work for a company for 2 years and get a lifetime pension and medical benefits? These 535
already have that, and they tell you to "Work Hard" and you can gain success, yes perhaps some of that is true, but the 535 only "Work Hard" to get re-elected because they already know that they have it "MADE" regardless of the outcome. I have lived most of my life, but I have a great fear for the type of life my grandchildren will be left with. Plant this is your brains: 16 TRILLION dollars of debt, does anyone really understand what a TRILLION dollars is?

The hate I see written here just proves one thing- that almost nothing has changed in the past 50 years. In 1952 my family moved from Germany to Little Rock, where we soon learned that lots of hate existed there. We were shocked to see the color line in the bus, the colored drinking fountain in the McClellan's, and the white only waiting room at the bus station. I remember a man trying to buy the vote of a black woman who worked with my mother- she told him where he could put his money! I remember when the National Guard troops kept the black students from entering Central High School. I thought things might be different here in the north, but not so. The racism was merely better hidden. When I was looking for a house here in Cinnaminson in 1976, the realtor was reluctant to show me the house I now live in. She said "you would not want to live there", but gave really odd reasons like the color of the carpet. When I pressed her on the issue, she admitted that it was because the house next door was owned by a black family, to which I said, "so what, it does not matter what color they are." Happily, the wonderful Hyler family still lives next door. I could not ask for better neighbors!
Racism is still alive in this country- we really need to just get over it! The hate and racism in many of the comments here makes me quite ill.

Hate speech is unacceptable, but religious critique is fair game. As long as you're not threatening violence, name-calling, and you stay on-topic you're pretty much free to post what you feel here.

And please, in the interests of keeping these boards a good place to have a discussion, TRY TO HAVE A DISCUSSION. That means taking the time to address the person on the other side of the keyboard AS A HUMAN BEING instead of firing off rants with no give and take. Again: you want to do that? Start a blog. We've got the mechanics for it. But don't dirty up the comments section because it becomes unreadable quickly.

This brings to mind, as if I had not thought of it for a day or so, that every time any Republican tries to bring some responsibility to the process of writing a budget, the wailing and gnashing of teeth begin, about how “the rich need to pay more to take care of the poor.” Poor, like Michelle, with her multi-million dollar vacations, Barry, flying on a separate plane, Solyndra, half a billion, and so on.

The big question, of course, was why? Why is an apparently properly sourced story of Maila's vacation vanishing? If it was false, one would expect White House push-back, with the news sources either denying the White House’s arguments or issuing apologies for their error. A vanishing story, however, has been a first. And now the truth has come out. The White House told the news agencies that it’s not fair to report on his kids, not even when they incurr millions of dollars as wanton disrespect to the american taxpayer and our struggling unemployed.

Small Town Antics- look at the growth of the money supply: the President's Council of Economic Advisors(Christine Romer) originally proffered a figure of a $1.8T stimulus to make up for the lost in GDP, the Congress settled for under $800B. . .blame that on Obama. . .Most unbiased economist are in agreement that what Wall St caused would not be wind down for 10 years, but I guess what Obama did in 4 years...creating 4.5M jobs for one, is not good enough, and then there was the cooperation of the party of NO who filibustered last years jobs program...not to mention the $4T "Grand Bargain" deficit reduction plan that the President proposed, that Boehner flip-flopped on? I could go on. . .but your mind is made up, so I won't be jotting down any more facts.

Spooner is spouting proven lies...

However, CNN fact-checked that claim and found it to be "not the whole picture." Instead, CNN found that there has been a net increase of just 300,000 nonfarm payroll jobs since Obama took office. And if you count government jobs, there are actually 400,000 fewer people working today than in January 2009.

When Democrats use the 4.5 million jobs number, they're referring to jobs created after the economy bottomed out in January 2010, one year after Obama took office. That time frame excludes the worst job losses, which took place in 2009,

Hookerman- I do pick battles wisely -- and your buddy Obama voted to EXTEND/REAUTHORIZE the Patriot Act in 2011. SO -- the leader of YOUR PARTY thinks all of the civil liberty abuses being committed by DHS and TSA workers is just dandy!

BTW -- you didn't know me in 2001, so how could YOU know what I did or did not support. I didn't support the so-called Patriot Act. It was unnecessary and created a redundant department (Department of Homeland Security).

We have enough federal agents in all of the alphabet soup agencies, we didn't need any more.

BTW -- you need to check YOUR facts. The OBAMA NSA wants to EXPAND its monitoring (as if they aren't already doing it) and several whistleblowers have already reported that the OBAMA NSA is conducting illegal domestic spying.

"RE: Hookerman 4:12 pm on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 Now you're just getting humorous. The Homeland Security stuff, like TSA searches, and NSA electronic monitoring was all heralded by the republicans as necessary tactics in the war on terrorism during the Bush administration. You had no trouble with Bush raping the constitution, but get really upset when Obama does the exact same thing. You’re losing credibility by the minute… obviously you’re not smart enough to choose your battles wisely."

Patrick, So much to say is absolutely correct. Obamacare takes a % of the sale of your home to pay for Obamacare. Some people believe gov. gives you stuff "free". It has to come from somewhere... where do you think they get the $ to pay for millions of people who will get "free healthcare". In addition there are over 20 new taxes and the health ins. companies more than doubled almost tripled the health ins. I get to keep mine. Lucky meeeeeeeeeeee! Went from $300 a mo. to over $1,000 do you really think I get to keep my ins.? I no longer have ins. Can't afford it after Obamacare passed he knew that would happen. Forcing everyone on to "socialized healthcare"....Of course I can keep my ins. but it cost more than double my motgage than they take 3.8% when I sell my house. If you don't get it, look it up.

If this President had not bailed out the auto industry, it would be legally owned by Russia or China Inc. What happens in a free market when GM or AIG is allowed to collapse? In a free market, the bidder with the deepest pockets is allowed to buy it up. We could not let that happen. Our America markets are not like in China or Russia where an American Company cannot blink without these fascist governments giving permission.

therealdoll, you are so uninformed. First the bankruptcy laws would have allowed GM to be restructured and today they would have a much lower cost structure and be viable. GM would not have been sold off in an auction as you claim. AIG was rescued because if it did not pay its claims many many companies would have collapsed. The two are profoundly different fact patterns. I hope you do not cast a vote in the election without the knowledge to understand the issues and make informed decisions.

I love how men use abortion as a weapon for our votes as if most responsible women don't know how to be responsible. I don't vote based on something that is legal. I vote based on our government failing to enforce our immigration laws. I vote to eliminate taxpayer funded pensions for unions when 90 percent of us don't have them. We pay for ourselves or course that is if we can get a job. A job will allow me to buy my kid school supplies or food. Trillion dollar budget debts don't trickle down to us. The sad thing is that most women actually buy that and not even buy it are passionate in voicing how they arent responsible enough to be in charge of their body, that they need to gov't to bail them out for their mistakes.....but that is the typical Obama voter, one that is not responsible and needs government asisstance in their lives. Welfare recipients should be required to take a drug test for every check, every illegal should be deported, you should be required to show an ID to get into school and to vote, people should want to work hard and keep their money, these are simple, logical things, but most people are just lazy and want handouts

Why would you feel sorry for us?
Michelle was a black woman whose freshman roommate freaked out when she found out she was black. She came from a working class black family to Princeton in the 80's. Can you relate to the African American experience in the 80's at Princeton? I know you can't if you find issue with a 21 year old women writing about her honest experiences. Well we should feel sorry for you that you have such a limited concept of academia that you would hold something like this against her. Further the focus of this paper isn't 'white people'... It is about the Princeton University black community... "I have found that at Princeton, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my white professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don't belong. Regardless of the circumstances under which I interact with whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be black first and a student second."

I wonder what you would write after spending 4 years at a Hampton University or Howard.

As a 40 something man who spent some time at Princeton campus as a visiting athlete , We used to joke about the diversity there in the 80's and I ran track... Not the whitest of sports. As my knees can affirm, that was a very long time ago... and Princeton has changed. I live near there and spend a bit of time in town... Princeton is a much different place, and that is down to voices like Michelle's.

Board - Read "The Enemy at Home." From his book: "I am saying that the cultural left and its allies in Congress, the media, Hollywood, the nonprofit sector and the universities are the primary cause of the volcano of anger toward America that is erupting from the Islamic world. The Muslims who carried out the 9/11 attacks were the product of this visceral rage—some of it based on legitimate concerns, some of it based on wrongful prejudice—but all of it fueled and encouraged by the cultural left. Thus without the cultural left, 9/11 would not have happened." Additionally, IF he did indeed say what you posit, you may wish to place it in perspective. D'Souza has consistently held that America charts its own course for better or for worse. Now, what was it exactly that was inaccurately depicted in 2016? The facts don't lie. We are not better off. Gas and food cost more. The debt is out of control. There are no jobs. If this was a Republican Democrats would be seeking blood but since it is the greatest pretender of all time they ignore it. I can't figure out why. Women, men. I promise that you will hear more of what Reverend Wright said, and maybe even worse. Here's another newsflash...if you don't like what you hear, fix the problem that leads to such speech. I have attended a Baptist church my entire life, and if that makes me and my pastor a hatemonger, I will proudly wear it!!

Oh, and what would a white person do at Howard? Why, they would attend and get a scholarship for being a minority student. Duh.

I love the angst that the Obamas cause for a good number of you. LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL. It tickles me to death. First Obama is a Muslim, yet he is also a hatemonger because he attends Reverend Wright's church. Next, Obama is a Kenyan. Next, Obama did not earn Law Review. Now, Michelle hates white people. The question all women should be asking is, "When will Obama start providing REAL jobs, not just minimum wage, no benefits, flipp'in burgers down at Mickey D's?"

Even the NYT recognizes what a pathetic and weak recovery we've seen from the Obama/Reid/Pelosi "Stimulus" Plan - http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/31/business/majority-of-new-jobs-pay-low-wages-study-finds.html?hp

So all the people out there screaming "Obama Created 4 MILLION New Jobs," should just STFU. After you sift out all the detritus, you get about 1.6 Million, or less than 75,000 per month of the supposed recovery.

So twenty years later, the mantra should be the same - It's the Economy Stupid.

From a Post above...
"A major function of the leader of the greatest nation on earth is to bring the country together to acomplish common goals. In reading these comments, I have never seen a more polarizied nation. "

Folks, every one of us that does not try to conduct civil debate about real issues is part of the problem. Look at the posts in this thread. The level of discourse is pathetic. Talk about issues. Cite facts. Stop with the smearing of one another. These are your neighbors in the community in which you chose to live and make your homes. We have major issues to tackle as a country and we CAN tackle them, but only if we work together.

Modern media is a very, very dangerous thing. Soundbites and anonymity are a toxic combination. If Montclair Patch wanted to support a more civil level of discussion that might actually solve problems, find common ground and help create solutions, they should ban people posting that don't use their real names. It's amazing just how tough and confrontational people tend to get when they can say things and no one knows who actually said them. Again, would you speak to your friends and neighbors this way? Would you show up at a dinner party with people that you don't know and start speaking like people speak to one another here? It's truly incredible.

Stop attacking one another and start trying to help solve problems rather than being part of the problem.

This is not a Democrat or a Republican issue. It is a human civility issue. And I am not talking about our leaders. I am talking about us. Our discourse.

Towards that end, everyone (Republicans, Democrats, Independents) should be equally horrified by what Mr. McConnell said because it speaks to stopping the search for a middle ground and compromise -- the very principle on which our country was founded and became great. The President is the embodiment of us -- the people. And whether or not any one individual voted for him (and, hopefully one day soon, her) I believe that there is (at a bare minimum) an implied civic duty to try to find common ground. To compromise and find things upon which we can agree so that we can move things forward.

We cannot move forward if we allow our leaders or ourselves to accept that kind of blanket rejection of stepping above party politics or individual ideals to think about what is best for the collective whole. We are very much in a global age and while we sit an bicker and point fingers and close our minds and ears to what each other is saying, other countries without this mass psychosis (e.g. China, India, etc.) are slowly but surely eating our collective lunch.

The proper calculation of debt to GDP is to INCLUDE state and local debt, including unfunded government workers pension liabilities. This is how it is calculated in Europe. If you calculate the US debt to GDP on this basis its 175%!! The democrats do not get that no matter how much you raise taxes you cannot pay this down. Entitlements must be reformed, not eliminated. Bill Clinton was guilty of sexual harassment but never charged. Under the law a subordinate cannot have consensual sex with a superior as its is deemed sexual harassment. Its quite simple concept, the issue is that the other workers who did not provide the boss with a sexual favor are deemed disadvantaged and they are the victims of the harassment. I never understood how women stood with Clinton when he took advantage of a female intern and also disadvantaged the intern's co workers. Monica received a favorable transfer to the Pentagon and the other interns were not given that same opportunity, because she provided Bill with a sexual favor. Clearly an illegal act and all politicians must be held to the law. It was not a private matter as democrats claim. It was a violation of the sexual harassment laws governing the workplace. Well its old news and today are issues are profound.

“Bill Clinton was guilty of sexual harassment but never charged. Under the law a subordinate cannot have consensual sex with a superior as its is deemed sexual harassment.”

This is absolutely an untrue statement, you are just making the law up off the top of you head. Sexual harassment is always defined as “unwelcome sexual advances”. There is no law that states that a consensual sexual relationship between a superior and subordinate is, in and of itself, a form a sexual harassment. Note below;

“A key part of the definition is the use of the word unwelcome. Unwelcome or uninvited conduct or communication of a sexual nature is prohibited; welcome or invited actions or words are not unlawful. Sexual or romantic interaction between consenting people at work may be offensive to observers or may violate company policy, but it is not sexual harassment.”

Concerned, I provided you a link to the legal definition of sexual harassment, but you still choose to wallow in your own ignorance. There is a reason why Clinton was NOT charged with sexual harassment with Monica Lewinsky, and that is because it was NOT sexual harassment based on the legal definition, since it was a consensual affair. He was charged with perjury for lying under oath, but not sexual harassment. There is no ‘conspiracy’ as to why he was not charged. Republicans would have certainly called for sexual harassment charges if it was in any way indicated.

Next time try researching the law before you publically declare what is legal and illegal.

"To engage in unwelcome sexually-oriented or otherwise hostile conduct"

and again:

"Sexual harassment may include a range of subtle and overt behaviors and may involve individuals of the same or different sex. Depending on the circumstances, these behaviors may include, but are not limited to: unwanted sexual advances or requests for sexual favors"

There is absolutely no mention of it being sexual harrasment for a superior to have a consenting relationship with a subordinate.

Let me help you with the law by providing you with an example. If a women provides a sexual favor to a superior and that women receives a raise in pay greater than others with her role and responsibilities or receives a promotion based on giving the sexual favor the other employees have an action under the law. They have been disadvantaged by virtue of the Bosses actions with a fellow employee.

That’s why I stated; “There is no law that states that a consensual sexual relationship between a superior and subordinate is, IN AND OF ITESELF, a form a sexual harassment.”

If there is some contingency to the relationship; either a promise of a promotion, or threat of dismissal or demotion, then yes, it can constitute sexual harassment.

This is stated in the ‘joke’ link I provided;

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when
1. submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual's employment,
2. submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such individuals, or
3. such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.

And BTW Concerned, while you ridicule the source I provided, you have provided NO source at all to substantiate your claims.

Hookerman
I do not know why I am providing this to you. But here is a summary from the Dept of Justice on Sexual Harassment Law. I felt this summary would be simple and easy to understand for a lay person.

Sexual harassment can occur in a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to the following:

1. The victim as well as the harasser may be a woman or a man. The victim does not have to be of the opposite sex.
2. The harasser can be the victim's supervisor, an agent of the employer, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or a non-employee.
3. The victim does not have to be the person harassed but could be anyone affected by the offensive conduct.
4. Unlawful sexual harassment may occur without economic injury to or discharge of the victim.
The harasser's conduct must be unwelcome.

Now its point 3 which is what Clinton should of been charged with IF another employee came forward and felt they were damaged by Clinton's sex with the intern. No one came forward and if another intern had come forward the press would of ruined their life. A big part of the law is to also keep victims from retaliation for reporting a violation. Well the press would of created a hostile environment for anyone coming forward so they did not.

The fact that another employee did not come forward to say they were damaged by the Clinton sex with Monica is irrelevant. I stated the law correctly. No one came forward because they feared the intense retaliation from the democratic party and the press. Monica received special treatment from the White House by virtue of her transfer to a job at the Pentagon after her sexual favor performed on Clinton. The sad thing is that the Democratic Party of "Women Rights" did nothing but support Clinton and it set back sexual abuse of women in the workplace by virtue of Clinton's actions.

Your original statement was; “Under the law a subordinate cannot have consensual sex with a superior as its is deemed sexual harassment.” You have provided nothing to back this up. All you’ve provided is verbiage that states if circumstances surrounding the consensual relationship affect employment decisions, then it may be sexual harassment, but nothing to prove that all consensual sex with a superior/subordinate is always sexual harassment. Again…. there is NO law that states that, and you have not provided one!

He is no role model for women despite his policial accomplishments. The bigger shame is that Hilarry is not President. She would never have failed like Obama has. I don't blame her for staying as far away from Bill. She endured plenty from his cheating

@Melanie. I would much prefer to have seen Hillary as president. I also liked McCain but Palin was far too stupid - even though she "could see Russia from her kitchen." I have always seen Obama as a Chicago politician.
Yes, Bill like women. But he is not the first man, president, or world leader to do so. Heck, the French worry if their president is not in bed with women other than his wife.

Melanie -- Hillary Clinton is just as corrupt as her husband. She was just a little smarter than him and didn't get caught.

I suggest you do a little research on the Whitewater scandal. See what comes up. Murder, graft, sex, perjury....it's got all the trappings of a sleazy mini-series.

The only reason she was able to get into politics was on her husband's coat tails. For some unknown reason, Democrats are in love with these two sleazeballs.

Hi Ric no offense but Joe Biden isn't exactly smart. What you fail to see is like Palin or not, she is a woman who has tried her best and instead of applauding women for reaching higher maybe above their ability you insult her. Btw Obama for all his so called smarts has failed miserably. Nancy Pelosi is not very bright. Hillary by far is different. And yes men like women but that doesn't mean they own us or can abuse us. This election is about the failures of Obama and what we can do to fix it. I voted for him. He failed. We are not better off.

@ Melanie. When you said I did not applauded women for reaching higher you forgot to note I spoke well of Hilary. Like her or not, you have to admit she is very smart. And I did quote Palin correctly.

This election is about putting America back in the right course. I do not love Obama. But I rather him for president (I cannot believe I am saying that) then supporting Romney who will bring us back to the failed policies of Dubya and Cheney.

Tell me this: do you think we can afford to wage war on Iran and N. Korea? Just say no to wars. We need to focus on building our industrial base. We need to innovate, we need to become like China and focus on business. We need to stop being the world’s (unappreciated) cop. I am not pleased with the direction we are going. But I sure as hell do not want to go back to Dubya ways.

Stig- that is true about a lot of those jobs not replacing good jobs that had wages and benefits before the Great Recession, but this has been going on here for along time...starting back in the late 60s' to early 70s', with the decline of private sector unions and factories relocating to right to work states in the South.

...and Yes it's Economy. . .but it has more to do with capitalism. . .maximizing profit. . .that's why that same textile industry that relocated to the South, has now been off-shored. Those manufacturing jobs are not coming back!

Iran doesn't care about us so we need to be prepared. Gutting the military will cost millions of jobs and affect local economies. When some politician actually has a plan to transition military spending without impact so be it. Until then I doubt anyone D or R wants to shut down bases and force job losses on Lockheed. We need a plan. Obama has none!

Bush/Cheney shut down bases all over this country while in the midst 2 wars (BRAC 2005). I'm not sure what your point is with that. NJ loses $3.2B annually as a result and it affected 20 thousand people's jobs. The cost to close Fort Monmouth alone was $2.6B. This country does not have the resources to go to war with Iran or anyone else, when we were bleeding a $7.1B a month since the FY03 for just the Iraq war. I have to question whether you completely understand the ramifications of what Bush/Cheney did to this country. (let alone the 180 day vacation he was on while our country was attacked).
Even if the Republ House didn't have a mission to ensure that this President would only have one term I don't think any president could have turned around 8 yrs of the worst leadership in American history in 3 1/2 years. Romney/Ryan have no clear plan. I really don't think that a man who is valued at $250M (that doesn't not even count the secret offshore accts) has any idea what the middle class in this country needs. Take a look at the Super Pacs that are supporting his election - all big business and extremists. To me that is a clear indicator of who will be his priority. Then you have Ryan's Tea Party alignment. Very scary. This is a man who co-wrote an anti-abortion bill with "women can stop pregnancies when forcibly raped" Todd Akin. Are these the kind of people that should be running this country? I know that I don't.

Medicare, medicaid, SS and the military need cuts and changes. I always find it amazing how those that complain the most about the economy never want to touch the military, especially if they are in it and on the dole. The days of the US being John Wayne and riding in with the cavalry is over. We can't afford it. AND we cannot bring democracy to countries that are still living in the middle ages.

Patrick's ignorant statement: "u said the that ARMED IRS agents... That is what I had issue with. Sure if you dodge taxes, they come get you... but normally its in coordination with a local sheriff"

Here is the IRS special agent job description -- read slowly Patrick (pay attention to part "Applicants must carry and use a firearm.")

"Special Agent Qualifications: All applicants must be United States citizens. This is a Federal Law Enforcement position....Applicants must carry and use a firearm. A valid driver's license is required." (Source: http://jobs.irs.gov/midcareer/cisa-qualifications.html)

Now let's destroy you "sheriff" claim -- that's MORE ignorance from you -- and please note: "only federal agency that can investigate potential criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code."

IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) is comprised of approximately 4,100 employees worldwide, approximately 2,700 of whom are special agents whose investigative jurisdiction includes tax, money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act laws... IRS is the only federal agency that can investigate potential criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code. (Source:

do you really think you condescend to me? and so what there are armed IRS agents... doesn't mean that there is an army of them coming for you if you skip out on Obamacare... That was the original context. right? So if you have a capital gains from selling your home over 250k in profit and have to pay medicare tax at 3.8% on that like you would salary, and say you owe say 10k... You are saying the IRS will come to your door FIRST with guns drawn. Is that what You are saying? or is it more to the point that you get a letter, then a second, then a certified letter, then they garnish your wages.... Then if then even have the personal they audit you, and then if they find that you did this purposefully they prosecute you. I think you need to get over this need to be right and stick to the point. Its like you can't stand on your own two feet in argument so you dispute the fringe elements that have NOTHING to do with the core of the issue. I can just picture you googling all of these defenses just to be right...

The point is there is no secret army of IRS agents coming for people because of Obamacare. and no matter what you link to or say you can never prove that cause it doesn't exist...

Good for them but if they didn't have the ladder many would not even get the chance. That is so self evident that it is not even something to be argued about.
One of the most important parts of Clinton's speech was about Medicaid and the fact that 2/3rds go to people in nursing homes. These are your parents and how will you react when they don't have the same benefits. Are you prepared to either homecare, throw them in the streets or make up the difference yourselves. That is something even the most hard hearted Conservative can think about.

Dan, during the Republican convention, the film about Romney's parentage portrayed his grandparents as "refugees" that came from Mexico to the US, but left out the little detail that they were American citizens that abandoned America for Mexico in order to practice polygamy. They only returned because of the chaos of the Mexican revolution. And yes, the mean old US Government gave these returning Mormons a government stipend to help get back on their feet. But those facts don't align very well with the "I built it on my own" fairy tale that is the Romney campaign.

i keep hearing the question; are you better off today than you were 4 years ago? and my personal answer is definetly yes, much better.
i work in construction and 4 years ago i lost my job because company couldnt get enough work. i couldnt stand being unemployed and busted my butt doing part time work and looking for jobs. i would be lucky to find one or two ads for jobs in my field a month. most jobs i applied for i was over qualified for or if a job was a good fit id be competing against 100s over qualified people desperate for work.
after a couple years i finally landed a great job with a construction company. when i compare the construction field in northern new jersey currently to 4 years ago it is 10 times btter now. 4 years it was nearly impossible to find projects now we have to turn some down because we are so busy.
when i visit websites for construction jobs that used to have 1 or 2 listings a month they now have atleast 10 good job listed a week.
so from my point of you view the construction field and myself are much better off today than we were 4 years ago

You might be better off but most people in the construction industry are either still unemployed or seriously under-employed. Gasoline was $1.87 when Obama took office. Now it's more than $3.60 per gallon. Food prices are up. Home energy costs are up. The costs of transportation are up, credit card interest rates are up, millions are without homes, children go to bed hungry, etc., etc., etc.

I guess the military who were fighting and dying in Iraq aren't part of your equation because they aren't in Iraq any more. I guess you either don't count the auto workers and their suppliers who regained their foothold in a tough ecconomy. You can say that many public employees are worse off but that is because of many Republican Governors who like Christie cut the funding for them ( NJ Unemployment 9.8% ) and cut the benefits they recieve but actions like that have only hurt NJ further. People who saw their IRA's decline when the Market fell to 7000 are better off because now the market is back up 50-60 %. Go ahead and vote for the Romney/Ryan Snake Oil Company. It is clear to me, and many other Independent voters who have had enough of the Obama Administrations failed programs (ie Solyndra, Fast and Furious), that 4 years of Obama is enough. The attempted Killing of the Coal industry from supplying fuel for Electric Power Plants has caused increases in the cost of electricity for all Americans. The Obama ban on Oil Drilling has given us Diesel and Gasoline prices higher than ever seen before. These examples are just the tip of the iceburg. Independent voters do not hold a convention but we do meet at the state level and if the Democrats knew what was being discussed in our meetings the Democrats would be cleaning the skid marks out of their shorts in the wake of what they would hear. It's quite clear you know little about political history. The statement "It's the economy, stupid" is a slight variation of the phrase "The economy, stupid" which James Carville had coined as a campaign strategist of Bill Clinton's successful 1992 presidential campaign against sitting president George H. W. Bush. Clinton's campaign had advantageously used the then-prevailing recession situation in the US as one of the campaign means to successfully unseat George H. W. Bush.

If you don't investigate for your self and you blindly follow the Republican or Democrat party or only rely only on the Main Stream Media (ABC,CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX) for your information you will be very mislead.

The internet has many places to find facts and information. Voting for the wrong candidate can and will effect you and your family. The wrong thing to do is focus on one issue that you support, such as Health Care, and ignore everything else that could or would make the country worse off overall and possibly damage our ability to provide Health Care.

So, how in the world is it possible that Obama can have a website and a personal video telling African Americans to vote for him based 100% on race. "African Americans for Obama"? This is a disgrace! What if Romney or another white candidate had "White People for the white guy". He would be sued, criticized, persecuted, and ridden out of town, yet this in an actual site by Obama. I don't care what color you are, or what party you are, this is wrong on so many levels! Thanks for bringing this Country back to the 1920's Obama! http://www.barackobama.com/african-americans/.

The website describes the policies his administration has implemented that have either directly or indirectly addresses issues (education, early childhood development, urban development, minority business investment, Healthcare, crime and justice, etc.).... This is a vastly different than what you are describing which from my interpretation of your statement would be more like President Obama saying - "I'm black, your black, vote for me"..... Clearly President Obama is not saying that and as Spooner points out below... targeting specific voting blocks (age, religion, ethnic group, etc.) with policies that are important to them based on their shared issues is nothing new... President Obama presents a racial paradox that we (Americans) are still grappling with... A country that has elected its first African-American President while still trying to work through its post civil rights/racial discrimination past, compounded by a rapidly growing ethnic minority (Latinos, Asian, African-American, Middle Eastern, Indian (India)) population. It shows that while we have made great strives in racial issues, we as a country still have work to do on this issue....

* Forced healthcare under armed IRS threat;

* Forced to submit private medical information to government to qualify for healthcare;

* Warrantless monitoring by armed and unarmed drones over their homes;

* Warrantless searches/checkpoints on highways, concerts, and other events by Department of Homeland Security;

* Forced to pay in taxes for discounted tuition for illegal immigrant students, while their children pay full rate.

* Forced to vaccinate their children with drugs that have never been tested to cause cancer.

* Forced to submit private information to the census about your income, priave telephone number, how many toilets in your house, specific age/sex of the children -- under threat of fines by the federal government.

...the list goes on and on. If you don't believe me, just do a search for those key terms. All of these programs are happening RIGHT NOW as either trials or are fully deployed.

So much fear from the Republicans that Mitt will lose. I find it very interesting that they all have amnesia as to how we got here. Two wars (thousands dead, ten of thousand injured increasing the VA costs for many many years to come), fast & loose spending (or "spending like a drunken sailor", per John McCain), BRAC (NJ loses $3.2B a year as a result), free for all in the banking industry, free for all on Wall St (deregulation) and tax cuts for the wealthy. LISTEN UP: These people DO NOT have your best interest in mind!! Only theirs! Stop listening to Fox News for the facts. (even though the Romney campaign has stated they will not let fact checks affect their message). Use your brains, research their policies and what the results would be for this country. It didn't work for 8 years of the worst administration to ever govern this country. Why would we go back to the same failed policies. That's fine if you don't agree with President Obama's philosophy but don't use false accusations & misinformation to hide your bigotry. If you don't like what he's doing vote him out. But please please please stop the ridiculous rhetoric. But also remember, be careful what you ask for. These haters DO NOT make this country a better place. Promote nothing but intolerance and violence.

You are absolutely correct. Dubya and Cheney ruined this country by waging ridiculous wars, spending like "drunken sailors", loosening bank regulations, and enacting insane tax cuts for the wealthy. The republicans know this and they even also know Romney and Ryan will bring back the failed policies of Dubya and Cheney. They are offering up rehashed old failed policies and try to appear righteous by throwing lots of god with it. (God is not an American citizen despite what Mormon Romney claims). If there was any sort of hope of change from Dubya, the far right republicans would be touting Mitty's new ideas. Lacking anything to show Romney and Ryan will actually improve this nation the far right has to do something to promote Mitty. The only tool they have left is to character assassinate. It worked well for then in the days of Karl Rove.
Alas, Romney and Ryan will have us in Iran and North Korea within a year – just like with Dubya.

The far right forgets the moderate republicans are fed up with this crap. That is why this moderate went from apathetic to become a supporter of Obama. I pray the far right get kicked in the teeth in November and then fade into obscurity.

You will Remember that moderate Republicans, people that this President could work with are gone, either dead, forced out in primaries or simply walked away. When the Government started to enforce equality Southern Democrats fought it but in the end those southern Democrats most opposed to civil rights signed by Johnson went to the Republicans. DNC values ... Clinton, the serial sexual abuser, certainly was impeached by the House of Representatives on two charges, one of perjury and one of obstruction of justice, on December 19, 1998. The Arkansas Supreme Court suspended Clinton's Arkansas law license in April 2000. On January 19, 2001, Clinton agreed to a five-year suspension and a $25,000 fine in order to avoid disbarment and to end the investigation of Independent Counsel Robert Ray (Starr's successor). On October 1, 2001, Clinton's U.S. Supreme Court law license was suspended, with 40 days to contest his disbarment. On November 9, 2001, the last day for Clinton to contest the disbarment, he opted to resign from the Supreme Court Bar, surrendering his license, rather than facing penalties related to disbarment.

^^^ "Obama is worth 40 million yet he never had a job" in the private sector. Romney is worth 250 million applying American principles to live the American Dream by creating jobs around the world that put Americans out of work, taking advantage of tax loopholes that passes much of his fair share onto others, and investing his earnings in foreign countries that often use his money to compete against the interests of America. Obama may not be the answer to all of our problems (most are global problems, not just America's), but he does offer a better chance for more elections for U.S. Presidents taking place. Mitt Romney is running in the wrong election. He should be running for Emperor of the Entire Corporate World. After all, the corporate world embraces half-truths and outright lies, ignores and covers-up messy and unpleasant details, and significantly rewards those that stroke its lust for greed and power without regard for anybody or anything else. Kind of like the commercial referred to as the 2012 Republican Convention. The only realistic difference I see between the rightwing fanatics that have taken over the Republican Party and the fanatics ruling Iran is that Iran is far more honest as to its goals than the GOP fanatics relentless efforts to return the world to the feudal system of serfs (99%) and lords (1%.) Currently, under Obama, 99% of Americans live in freedom and 1% lives in prison. As part of the current 99%, I’m in no rush to reverse those stats ever.

John Jay

Anthony Perrucci -- Actually Clinton was impeached. There were not enough votes in the Senate to convict him, however.

When a President engages in high crimes and misdemeanors, they are impeached (like be indicted) and tried in the Senate. A 2/3 vote was needed in the Senate; they fell 17 votes short to remove him from office.

If Clinton were a federal employee, he could have, and surely would have been convicted in a court of law. What a shame.

* Rejecting the United States enter into a treaty with the United Nations that places the security and privacy of law-abiding citizens who own firearms at risk?

* Rejecting the plan to deploy tens of thousands of drones over the U.S. so that they can spy on Americans (without a warrant)?

* Rejecting the plan to use the NSA to collect and monitor electronic data of Americans without a warrant?

* Rejecting the deployment of Department of Homeland Security employees to stop American citizens on highways without probable cause and subject them to searches?

* Rejecting the establishment of paramilitary teams within the IRS, DHS, SSA, NWS; etc.

If you support these things, YOU are the one with the "extreme" problems becuase YOU do not support, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

RE: "Dan Grant 11:45 am on Friday, September 7, 2012 John Jay I love the way people with the most extreme views like to take historical Names to give them credibility. Your history is 50 years old or more. It is not representative of today's Republican Party or the extreme Tea Party."

Agreed-Clinton made a poor decision in his personal life that was hurtful to his family. However, the decisions he made with regard to public policy led to 8 years of "Peace and Prosperity"! Hard to argue with success. Contrast with 8 years of W. Two wars (one clearly wrong), exploding debt, turned surplus to deficit. I know there will be many W. supporters who will rebut me, however consider why Romney and the Repubs have distanced themselves from W. and Obama and the Dems embrace Clinton. With regard to when "human life" begins I suggest looking at the many opinions offerred by the Supreme Court (supremecourt.gov) in their many decisions over the last 40 years. I believe "human life" begins when the fetus could reasonably survive on its own outside the uterus (approx. 6 months). Show me where any Political Party supports late term abortions as a general rule and not as an exception.

Andy Pat,
Clinton sex acts in the Oval Office was not a personal matter. Sexual harassment is a crime and obstructing and lying during an investigation is a big crime. If he was the CEO of a company any Board of Directors would of fired him. Our Congress did not hold him accountable and caused a set back to the laws that protect our wives, sisters and daughters in the workplace. Sad. Now for Clinton's policies. The economic collapse was caused by the deregulation of the Banking industry by Clinton when he repealing Glass Stegall Act which allowed banks to invest in high risk areas like derivatives, trading and the like. That put our financial system at risk. Clinton also passed the Home Affordability Act that forced banks to give mortgages to people with poor credit and no down payment. Those two policies were what caused the economic meltdown. Bush should have reversed those policies but did not so I hold him accountable as well for his inaction. Lastly babies are now, due to the miracle of science surviving outside the womb at less that 1 pound. That is not six months. So in one room in a hospital a 2 pound baby is being killed by an abortion and in another room a half pound baby is being saved and nurtured to full term as premature. Amazing but its unsustainable to have such a contradiction in how we as a society value life. Science is redefining everyday when life begins and Roe V Wade is based on very old science.

The Department of Homeland Security approaches you as the pastor of your church. I’ll give you 4. First, no one knows who he is and with less than 60 days left before the election they truly don’t care. After two plus years of pointless political debate that has established that no one has a better path than we are already undertaking, the people just want this election over with period. Second, realistically envisioning the demise of the IRS with the current shape the global economy falls more in line with a vacation trip to Fantasyland at Disneyworld. Like it or not, freedom has a price and it costs a lot more than the needs of a state of tumbleweeds that still seems more like an outpost in the Old West. Third, Romney may possess the intelligence W can’t even dream about, but Romney makes W look like a liberal, and I can no longer afford the leadership of the far, far right. I am more interested in seeing the current path develop more than returning to the path of unprincipled fanatics, and a protest vote this late in the game is a copout. Stand up and deal with the reality of this two-man election choice. And fourth, on a more personal note, I’m not ready to forgive the leadership of my party for holding the entire country hostage for four years just to neutralize any attempt by our current President to successfully lead our country, especially when their reverenced inspiration is nothing more than another Bob Dole.

2- you are right freedom is not free however hes not saying get rid of all taxes, he just offers a fairer/ better option: http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=HowFairTaxWorks
3-obama / dems had complete control for his first 2 years- did you see any big changes? did we have shovel ready jobs, is college tuition cheaper, is governtment more transparent?
4- say what you want about new mexico, johnsons track record speaks for itself. did a much better job than romney did as governer of tax-achsetts and better than obama as governer of... o i mena community organizer of the most corrupt city in america.

we are going to have to get into a conflict with Iran, because OB is to big of a P to stop them from getting nukes. Ric,
I did not answer it as i felt it was a silly question. But since you have asked twice i will respond. Romney will provide consistent strong leadership to the Presidency especially as it relates to foreign policy. Now for Iran, Romney will support our ally Israel period. Yesterday Israel's Defense Minister stated that something must be done to halt Iran's nuclear program in the next 50 days!! Obama has not been supportive of Israel and you should read some of the current Israel press and editorials and they are so critical of Obama and his lack of support. You must read them to see how they cannot stand Obama. They have good reason. If Iran which has stated clearly that they want to destroy Israel, gets nuclear weapons, it will be a disaster. So the Republican Party will support our ally Israel and its right to exist. Now for North Korea, there is no way any President can go to war with that country as it will cause China to have a strong reaction. By the way the Chinese hold a lot of our debt so we have to tread carefully with them as we need them to help finance our federal debt which is now at 16 trillion. So Romney will use diplomacy with China to ensure that North Korea behaves. China will keep N. Korea in check. I hope that was helpful and you can go back to using normal type fonts.

In the very next sentence, he used as an example how Israels creation wiped Palestine off the map in 1948. And somehow we all survived that, so don't get too excited about nothing.

Concerned, thanks for responding. We agree that Romney surely will wage war on Iran for Israel's behalf. Now let me ask why are Israel's problems also our problems? Please, do not rehash the old they are the only friend we have in the Middle East because that is not true. Besides, friends do not spy on friends like Israel has done to us. Disregarding the spying, it is not in America’s interest to war beside Israel against Iran. Nor is it our interest to shed the blood of America soldiers for Israel. That is just morally wrong. Yes, Israel has a legitimate fear about Iran obtaining nukes. But Iran has just as a legitimate fear about Israel's existing 1000 nukes already in her arsenal. Let Iran and Israel sort it out on their own.
As far as North Korea, China does not have them in check. If they did, half the stuff Korea recently (like missile tests) would not have occurred.
The bottom line is we are broke from Dubya’s two wars and cannot afford the more wars that Romney will get us in.

Israel having nukes is a far different scenario that Iran having Nukes. Iran is a Muslim Theocracy with a very different view of the world and freedoms, women's rights, and Israel's right to exist. Thank for your honest answer and it is an unusual trend in the democratic party to feel as if our commitment to Israel is optional. This shift will have a profound effect on this election.

@Concerned, an Israeli Jewish nuke would be at least as lethal as an Iranian Islamic nuke. Honestly neither nation should have even one. But Israel built them despite her promises to us so Iran in turn has to protect herself. We need to bail out now.
You are aware that at least twice in the last century Israel attacked her neighbors while a state of peace existed. 1956 & 1967. In 1967 Israel even slaughtered American sailors on board the USS Liberty.

Click link http://www.ussliberty.org/report/report.htm
After you read the report, please assure me that Israel is our friend. No one, Jew or Muslim is our friend in the Middle East. They have been killing each other for many of thousands of years and will do so for many thousands more. Killing each other almost seems to be in their genetic makeup.

Please, do not refer to me as a democrat. I support Obama because I do not want to return to the wars of Dubya & Cheney because they are bad for business.I am or was a moderate (Nixonian) republican. I guess now I am a man without a political party until the far right gets booted out.

the problem is with the people. It isnt complicated. Work hard, save at least 10% of your money in the bank, put at least 10% into your 401K, you dont buy a house unless you can put at least 20% down in cash, and you live below your means. Dont buy any new cars, dont eat out more than once a week, and have at least a 6 month cash reserve to pay all your bills. And only have kids once you are married and can afford them, which is probably about $50K income per child. If everyone did that, we would all be fine... But most dont want to work hard, dont want to save, dont want delayed gratification.... they just want handouts and give me's..

I too wish Clinton had not signed the repeal of Glass-Stegall (with the help of a Repub Congress). I actually thought derivitives pre-dated the G-S repeal, but please correct me if I am wrong. Either way I guess we need more regulation of banking and these exotic debt instruments. Sometimes these things called derivitives and CDOs( collateral debt obligations) remind me of the designer drug market. The people who design both are in a whack-a-mole race with the law. Outlaw one and they will come up with another. And while a select group of "business men" walk off with their blood money, the rest of society gets the shaft.

I read the comments here, and I wonder how many of you remember Rush's comments on the day of the Inaugeration that he wanted the President to fail. That has been the mantra for the extremists that have tried to take over the country - the one we ALL belong to - for the past four years. I am a woman who is sick and tired of anyone's "beliefs" dictating to me what I can and can not do to my reproductive organs, at the same time denying me the legal right to equal pay for equal work, to protect myself from acts of violence by strangers out of some hysterical belief that rape does not impregnate women, and that somehow the woman so violated will come to accept the product of that violent act. There is a war on woman, and it's nothing new. Just try being a woman who wants to keep her own name once married, who wants to get the hell out of the pink collar ghetto in the work place and not have a job that starts with filing papers or taking someone's words, or answering the telephone. Try getting a job as a mechanic, or paying for the birth control or childcare you need to be supporting yourself. And if you are so dumb as to believe that the daughter-in-law of the president of American Motors lived in a basement appartment with an ironing board for a table...well, please stay home and watch "Fox and Friends" for the results. You won't be missed at the polls, which are for people with functional minds who don't believe in every bit of crap you hear on the internet.
