This year's Jay Butler racing weekend started with 77 drivers at the ready to get behind the wheel of the 148 cars in the pit area. Saturday dawned with blue cloudless skies and temperatures headed to the high 70's, not quite the warm weather that saw several track records broken during the States races on Memorial Day weekend. Kiel Cochran would make the most of his opportunity in the Light World Formula qualifiers, however, by breaking the track record with a 6.702 on the 1/20th mile oval track.
In the afternoon, the D-mains and then C-mains would take to the track before racing was stopped for the day so that the drivers and their families could enjoy racing at Big Wall for the night. Ronnie Mullen, father of Cole Mullen who has just returned to race at GSQMRC after a bit away, would thrill the crowd of youngsters with his win in the first Factory Stock race of the weekend.
Returning to the track on Sunday morning with much the same weather, B-mains began just after 10 AM. In each main for the Junior divisions, 4 drivers would move up to the higher main with one hopeful waiting in the hot chute in case someone ahead of him or her could not make the green flag; for the Senior divisions, 5 drivers would move up with one waiting and keeping their fingers crossed.
The highlight of any Jay Butler weekend is the time spent with the Butler family. They were on hand to help open the A-main events for the weekend with Brett Butler waving the green for the Junior Animal race, after presentations to the Butler family and the National Anthem sung by the lady racers from visiting Silver City Quarter Midget Racing Club.
Brandon Grosso would take two A-main checkers for the day; becoming Jay Butler Champion in both Heavy 160 and Heavy World Formula. He would also make a power move on the last lap of the Heavy Honda A-main to come in second to winner Joey Bailey. Anthony Payne would hang on for the win in the Senior Honda after the leaders, Glen Gargiulo and Jimmy Potts tangled just before the checkers on lap 39 of the 40 lap race. Gargiulo would come back to finish 4th in that race and hold off a hard charging Potts in the Light 160 race to come in 3rd behind winner Jake Nelke and runner up Kiel Cochran. Others taking wins for the Jay Butler Memorial weekend were Ava Cochran in Junior Animal, Joshua Patterson in Senior Animal, Brandon Shipley in Junior Honda and Shawna Winters in the Mod division.
The weekend was also the last leg of 4 for the Tri-State series between the 4 Quarter Midgets of America tracks in New Jersey, Connecticutt and Pennsylvania. While the Wall club came into the show with a 4000 point deficit to the club from Connecticutt, the racers were able to whittle that down to a mere 20 points after the final race of the day. Congratulations to the Silver City club on winning the first annual Tri-State series overall cup. GSQMRC members who took individual divisional titles in the series were Cole Stangle, Patrick Gallagher, Justin Keraitis, Louie Keraitis, Jake Nelke and Brandon Grosso.
Racing will resume at the track this Sunday, September 23rd. Sign-ins start at 8:30 and racing begins at 10 AM. As always, admission is free and refreshments are available at the track.
There will be a special race on Friday, September 28th. All proceeds from the Racing Fun Night will benefit GSQMRC members Mark Pesavage and Lisa Wilson to help in their fights against cancer. Admission will be free; donations will be accepted.
