Each Township Committee member does more than the couple of hours a week for public meetings. Each is assigned to sit on various boards and sub-committees, giving each a particular sphere of influence in town. Each year, a host of residents pledge their time an energy to work on specific areas of Wall Township. The various boards and committees help to forge opinion and contribute to the smooth functioning of the town which depends, arguably, as much on these unpaid volunteers as it does those who are paid, or contract with the municipality to perform services. Each new year brings a new mayor and a new deputy mayor, but much of the administration of the town remains the same. The lawyers, engineers and planners who handle some critical functions of the town are independent contractors, paid for with your tax money and hired by those you elected to make the right decisions. At this week’s organization meeting of the Township Committee, the governing body, by unanimous vote, hired $679,500 worth of contractors in 19 positions to augment the salaried staff positions helping to keep the town running.
