Tragic Trend of Rail Suicides Concerns NJ Transit
There have been four "possible suicides" in Monmouth County, and more statewide. NJ Transit tells NorthJersey.com about the possible causes and prevention efforts
With help from New Jersey Department of Human Services, NJ Transit is trying to stop suicides on the tracks. But they continue.
Since January, there have been 27 fatalities on the tracks in New Jersey, 21 of them possible or confirmed suicides.
Monmouth County accounts for six of the fatalities. Tragically, four which occurred in Long Branch, Spring Lake, Matawan and Oceanport were "possible suicides" says the agency in its current Trespasser Fatalities report.
In an article published on NorthJersey.com, a NJ Transit spokesman talks about how people kill themselves, what experts think may be behind the numbers, and what the agency is doing to strengthen its anti-suicide message.
The New Jersey Department of Human Services officials have created suicide prevention awareness posters advertising the The NJ Hopeline (855-654-6735).
NJ Transit conductors and police also appear in public service announcements, which can be found on the NJ Transit webpage.
