Cell Tower Hearing To Continue Wednesday

5100 Belmar Boulevard plan for 150-foot tower has been largely unchallenged

One of three active applications to build cell towers in town is scheduled to be heard Wednesday, according to the Board of Adjustment’s agenda.

T-Mobile, based in Bellevue, Wash., wants to build a 150-foot tower at 5100 Belmar Boulevard, just west of Route 34. Representatives for the company have previously testified that the tower is needed to close gaps in the company's coverage area.

Time ran out on the application before cross-examination or public comment could be heard.

T-Mobile has three open applications to build towers in Wall. The carrier also wants to build towers at 3304 Belmar Blvd., near the Glendola Firehouse, and at 1817 Old Mill Rd. Residents have come out in force to speak against those plans.

But the tower slated for 5100 Belmar Boulevard has been largely unchallenged. That could change Wednesday, said Frank Gandolfo, owner of the House of Bounce. The business, located in a suite at 5100 Belmar Boulevard, offers birthday parties and other events for children.

"My business is primarily children and with all the talk about radiation and while we have no concrete evidence, I'm afraid of it impacting my business,'' Gandolofo said.

The company has eight cell towers either existing or proposed in town.

T-Mobile, like all cellular providers, is under orders by the Federal Communications Commission to provide a reliable network and the towers in each location will fill current gaps in its coverage, thereby satisfying the company's federal mandate, T-mobile engineer Gary Alcon has said.
