Freehold Man Faces Charges From Two Wall Accidents

A 52-year-old Freehold man was arrested and charged for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and other charges after police said he fled the scene of an accident in Wall Township.

On Saturday, June 22, officials from Wall Township police, Glendola Fire Department, Wall First Aid, Community First Aid and MONOC responded to the area of Highway 34 and Spring Street for a report of a three-vehicle motor vehicle accident, with two overturned vehicles. 

An on-scene investigation revealed that the two vehicles involved in the crash were headed north on Highway 34 when the crash occurred.

As a result of the crash, one of the vehicles, a Nissan Sentra, left the roadway, crashing into a utility pole causing the pole to sever at the base and also causing the vehicle to turn on its side.  The two occupants of that car were taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center for minor injuries.

The second vehicle, a Jeep Wrangler, overturned and came to rest in the median of Highway 34, police said in a prepared statement. The accident also involved a third car that police described as an unoccupied parked vehicled.

The driver of the Jeep, Roland Lopez, from Freehold was also transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center for minor injuries; and he was the treated and released. 

Lopez was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and two counts of assault by auto, a fourth degree crime. 

While investigating the above motor vehicle crash, Wall Township police received a report of a hit and run motor vehicle accident at State Hwy 34 and Hurley Pond Rd earlier in the day. 

The hit and run vehicle was described as a green Jeep Wrangler.  Investigation in that crash revealed that Lopez was the operator of the hit and run vehicle. 

The driver of the vehicle Lopez hit was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center for a complaint of pain where he was treated and released. 

Lopez was additionally charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, reckless driving, and assault by auto (fourth degree crime).

State Highway 34 was closed in both directions from Belmar Boulevard to Airport Boulevard for approximately one hour.
