School Board - Meeting 2

A Look Back on a Not-so Happening Event

After the board's reorganization meeting two weeks ago, I wrote a blog about how the new board members along with the sitting board members must get to the business of improving our schools.  Last night they took a huge step forward toward that goal.

Prior to last night's meeting many rumors swirled around town that more "fireworks" were in store or that some other drama would occur.  Instead, the board members, old and new, worked cooperatively to advance the ball by approving much of the superintendent's suggested re-hires.  That's not to say there were not and continue to be questions about performance.  But those are internal issues that have to be worked out in and between the personalities on the board.  However, while board members may have differed on whether a vote was proper for any individual administrators, we did see all treated respectfully.

In fact, last night residents asked questions and received responses in polite, quiet tones.  I did not get the impression that any felt dissed or insulted and that everyone, board members and the public alike, acted and were treated properly.  This, in and of itself, says a lot about how a new board will function.

Certainly, the majority of those in the 3/4 filled cafeteria came to see something big- whether it be a big speech by a board member, member of the public, or to see someone maybe get fired.  Thankfully, none of that occurred and we are all better off for it.  For what the anti-climatax lacked in provocation it more than made up for in progress.  For that we should all be thankful.

Now the board can go on about doing it's mundane work educating our kids!!  Let's continue to support them all- new and old- because it is in all of our interests that the board and the public continue on what has started as a great new relationship.
