PHOTO: NASA Rocket Over Spring Lake

Wall Township teacher and photographer Mike Black snapped this photo Tuesday night of the NASA Minotaur Launch from Wallops Island, Va., as seen from the beaches of Spring Lake.

The gaps in the streak across the night sky, Black says, are the rocket stages shutting down and lighting up.

Photo is a single 145-second exposure, showing the launch and staging of the Minotaur rockets carrying satellites into orbit.

The main mission of Tuesday's ORS-3 launch will be to launch STPSat 3, a host spacecraft for five experiments and sensors to measure the space environment. Employing such capabilities on future space missions could reduce costs and the time required to prepare rockets for launch.
