North Wall Baseball Riding High

North Wall All-stars enjoy success on the field.

The North Wall  Boys baseball all-stars have been on quite a roll since the tournaments have started.  Starting action on Monday, the 8-year-old boys are 3-0 and have qualified for the semi final game, the 9-year-old team is 4-0 and in their championship game, while the 10-year-old team is 2-0 in pool play.  Game recaps of the teams play this weekend below.

Game 1 for the NWLL 8s - After a 90 minute rain delay, North Wall played Howell Central in their  first game in Neptune on Friday night. Howell Central jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first.  But North Wall came back with a lead off single by Michael Claudio in the 2nd. He later scored with a hit by Andrew Buono. Jimmy Nappo pitched strong in the second and third to hold Howell Central to no runs. Top of third the bats came alive with hits from Aiden Kelly, Geoffrey Schroeder, Alec Glen, and Casey Larkin.  Four runs were scored to take a 5-1 lead. Howell Central got two more in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-3. The game was then called in the top of 5th due to lightening.

Game 2 for the North Wall 8-year-old All-Stars was against Spring Lake/Sea Girt on Saturday.  It was a team effort pitching and hitting. Andrew Buono pitched three scoreless innings striking out 7 batters.  North Wall scored 6 runs in the first with an inside-the-park home run by Casey Larkin.  Six more runs were scored in the second with another inside-the-park home run by Casey Larkin.  Alec Glen came in the fourth to pitch and struck out the side. The game was tied 1-1 through 8 innings and North Wall gave up one run in the top of the 9th and then scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Grant Shulman had a walk off single in the bottom of the 9th to score Krystof Nikola and Elijah Scheininger with the winning runs! Sean Donohue singled in the first run for North Wall and Nick DeLaCruz was the player of the game with a single and strong defense behind the plate including throwing out a base runner trying to steal second, which thwarted the South Howell aggressive base running approach. The North Wall starting pitching and defense were superb with Elijah Scheininger starting and pitching 4 innings with only 1 unearned run. Grant Shulman came in and pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings with nine strikeouts and Michael Caputo pitched 1 1/3 innings to close the game.

Krystof Nikola made a great diving catch in center field in the top of the 9th to save two runs and keep the South Howell team from scoring any more runs that inning.

The 2011 North Wall 10-year-old baseball started district 11 in lightening fast style by sending 11 batters to plate and scoring 7 runs in the first inning of their opening game vs Howell South on Friday night. The game was suspended in the second inning because of lightening and rain and moved to Saturday. North Wall would continue to hit the next day as well on their way to a 18-7 win.

North Wall’s offense outburst was lead by Andrea Dalatri’s 3 run home run. Anthony Velaquez was 4-5, Joseph Shimko was 3-4, and Brady Scott chipped in with 2 hits as well.

North Wall got solid pitching innings from Dalatri, Raymond Morton and Dave Howarth.
