Today in New Jersey History:
July 10, 1926: The most damaging lightning strike in U.S. history hit the Naval Ammunition Depot at Lake Denmark in Morris County, part of the Picatinny Arsenal complex. Nineteen people were killed, thirty-eight were injured and an estimated $75 million in damage was reported following the subsequent explosion, equivalent to a billion dollars in current currency.
July 10, 1936: A temperature of 110 degrees Fahrenheit was reported at Runyon, in Middlesex County. It was the hottest temperature ever recorded in New Jersey history to that date.
