Death of the Akron

Today in New Jersey history:

April 4, 1933: The U.S. Navy airship ZRS-4, christened USS Akron and dubbed the “Queen of the Skies,” had had fifty-eight successful flights, as well as a series of serious accidents, before it crashed during a thunderstorm off the New Jersey coast at Barnegat, killing seventy-four of the seventy-seven officers and men aboard in the largest loss of life of any airship crash. It was the second airship of that name to meet its end along the Jersey shore.
