"God Holds You Over the Pit of Hell..."

Today in New Jersey history:

March 22, 1758: Jonathan Edwards, a “Great Awakening” preacher best known for the sermon in which he advised his listeners that “God holds you over the pit of hell like a loathsome spider,” died at the College... of New Jersey in Princeton following a smallpox inoculation. Edwards had recently replaced Aaron Burr Sr. as college president.

March 22, 1921: The New Jersey State Senate passed a bill establishing a state police force over the veto of Governor Edward I. Edwards. The Assembly subsequently overrode Edwards’ veto as well.
