Gradual Abolition of Slavery begins in New Jersey
February 15, 1804 An “Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery,” promoted by Governor Joseph Bloomfield, was passed by the New Jersey Assembly. Enslaved persons born before July 4, 1804, were to remain in servitude unless voluntarily freed by their masters, while children born to slaves after that date were to be freed at the ages of twenty-one for females and twenty-five for males. New Jersey was the last northern state to end slavery.
