Science & Beer -- Perfect Together

Today in New Jersey history:

April 7, 1880: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers was founded at Assembly Hall at Stevens Institute in Hoboken.

April 7, 1933: As prohibition began to come to a close, breweries were allowed to reopen and sell 3.2 percent alcohol-by-volume beer. The only New Jersey breweries ready to go into production on that day were Krueger’s in Newark and Hauck’s in Harrison. In 1935, Krueger’s, founded in Newark in 1858, was the first brewery to offer beer in cans. Krueger’s was sold and the Newark brewery closed in 1961.
