The Edgewater Ford Plant
Another old original photo added to the Jerseyana collection. In December 1930, the Ford Motor Company opened an assembly plant in Edgewater, NJ, an industrial town across the river from Manhattan. The picture shows, l-r, plant manager Charles J. Seyffer, "acting governor" Arthur Pierson substituting for Governor Larson, and mayor John F. Dinan of Edgewater at the grand opening. The factory could churn out a Model A car every 48 seconds, and was a major supplier of vehicles to Russia in WWII. It was closed in 1955 and, although named a historic site, much of it was demolished in succeeding years. Much of Edgewater's industrial past has resulted in superfund sites, but not this location, which is now the site of a condo development.
