The Goethals Bridge
Today in New Jersey history:
June 29. 1928: The Goethals Bridge, which linked Elizabeth with the Howland Hook area of Staten Island, was opened for traffic. The bridge, named after Major General George Washington Goethals, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s first consulting engineer, was designed by architect John Alexander Wassell. It is a cantilever span 7,100 feet long and 135 feet above the water in the center, allowing ocean-going ships to pass underneath. Although there has been talk of replacing it with a more modern structure, it still stands as of this writing.
