Today in New Jersey history:

April 6, 1778: The British and Loyalist raiding party that had destroyed the Manasquan River salt works the day before landed at Shark River, but rough weather and sniping militiamen intervened and they were only able to partly destroy the salt works at that location.

April 6, 1917: The United States declared war on Germany. In the ensuing weeks New Jersey National Guardsmen were mobilized at Sea Girt and sent to Camp McClellan, Alabama, where they became part of the Twenty-ninth Division before shipping out to France.
