Kathy's Chaos: Summer's Slipping By

Will I have enough time to complete our summer to-do list?

The older I get the faster the summer seems to fly by. How is it already mid-August?

Every summer, my kids and I think about the things we want to do. A checklist of fun things we like to do or new things we want to try. I feel like this year, we will run out of time before we get the chance to complete them all.

We still haven’t gone mini-golfing.

We still haven’t made it to Breakwater Beach in Seaside Heights or Hurricane Harbor in Jackson.

We still haven't made it to the Cape May Zoo.

We still haven’t tried a new ice cream place.

We still haven’t watched the sunrise on the beach.

We still haven’t eaten dinner on the beach.

To add to the pressure, my daughter checked a book out of the library titled, “101 Things You Gotta Do Before You’re 12!”

As she read me some items on the list, I got to wondering if the person who wrote this book has a full-time job. Here are a few of the things in the book that we will probably never do:

Walk a Swinging Bridge (Uh, hello, where? Danger!)

Take a Road Trip with a Twist (See, author does not work.)

Give Shakespeare a Chance (Sorry, not my thing, although we did go to the Surflight Theater and loved it.)

Stroll (or Hike or Kayak) by the Light of the Full Moon (Kayak by the full moon? Danger!)

Eat Space Food

Although many things in the book we won’t do or can’t afford to do or I don’t have the time to help them do, there were actually many things in the book that we have already done (fly a kite, host a party, look through a microscope, pick your own and catch a train, among others). I felt some of my working-Mommy guilt lift at that discovery.

As of today, my kids have 21 more days left of summer vacation. I am not sure how much more summer fun we will check off of our list before that impending September day.

In the back of my mind, I can already feel the stress creeping up regarding our fall sports and activity schedule. I am trying not to think about it and trying to enjoy these last few weeks before school starts.

Hey, maybe if I finish writing this now, we will still have time tonight for a round of mini golf! Catch you later!
