"Reading Buddies" Brings Students Together At Allenwood Elementary

For the past three years, Mrs. Holzapfel’s 5th grade students and Mrs. Mohr’s class have been involved in a special reading program called “Reading Buddies.” In the beginning of each school year, students from Mrs. Holzapfel’s class are asked if they would like to volunteer their time and reading skills to this unique program, which requires them to read to others in a public setting.  “Reading Buddies” takes place on a weekly basis, throughout the school year. Typically, 100% of the students are willing and eager to participate.

“Reading Buddies” consists of two student volunteers, who are selected each week from Mrs. Holzapfel’s class. The children are asked to work together as a team by jointly selecting two books from the school library, which they believe would be most enjoyable to Mrs. Mohr's students. The partners then concentrate on refining their public speaking and fluency skills before presenting the material to Mrs. Mohr’s students.

Once the books are read, Mrs. Mohr’s class is encouraged to ask questions of the young readers before doing an activity based exercise related to the literature. Soon after, Mrs. Mohr’s class creates a special thank you card and hand delivers it to Mrs. Holzapfel’s student readers. This joyous event culminates with the exchange of high fives and exuberant smiles.
