Wall EMT Squad Teach Old Mill 5th Graders CPR
Every year, Wall Community First Aid Squad donates their time and life saving skills to Old Mill School 5th graders, in order to provide them with the basic knowledge of CPR, in the event they encounter someone suffering from a cardiac episode. Although the students do not receive a CPR certification, they do earn a “Hero Certificate” for participating. The class is provided free of charge and taught to all 5th graders, in the district, once a year.
During the class, the students were shown an informational video, which included demonstrations of varies types of CPR, such as hands only, mouth and hands, and CPR for adults and children. The Heimlich maneuver was also discussed, and a live demonstration was performed by the EMTs. Students were then encouraged to practice what they had learned from both the instructors and the DVD, by using Mini Anne CPR Training Manikins and practicing the Heimlich maneuver on their fellow classmates.

The class was a tremendous success and a fantastic opportunity for students to gain valuable life saving CPR skills from our town’s generous volunteer EMTs. The event was coordinated by Old Mill’s school nurse, Mrs. Marschalk, Physical Education teachers, Mr. Fisco and Mrs. Sarni, and Captain Mathew Giachetti, from Wall Community First Aid Squad. The Wall Community First Aid Squad is a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 1960. Their membership is comprised of 100% volunteers, dedicated to providing extensive emergency medical care to the citizens of Wall Township.
