Eatontown Man Bolts After 4-car Route 33 Crash

Laundry list of charges for man who fled scene, attempted to carjack two to escape

Following a crash that closed part of Route 33 for more than an hour Tuesday Howell Police jailed an Eatontown man on a littany of charges including attempted carjacking.

Freedom Young, 25, was charged with two counts of attempted carjacking, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle while driving under the influence and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license and causing injury followoing a Rotue 33 crash.

Young also was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with injuries and failure to report an accident.

He was taken to the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, in lieu of $308,500 bail, Howell police said.

Young was driving west on Route 33 when he moved into the eastbound lane and hit a car driven by Mary Hilsher, 62, of Spring Lake. Young's car continued moving and struck an empty school bus driven by 39-year-old Freehold resident Karen Levers. Young's car then struck a car driven by Mary Noto, 51, of Brick, police said.

Young fled the scene and ran onto the property of the Monmouth County Fire Academy, then to the property of the neighboring Naval Weapons Station Earle. From there, Young climbed back over the base's fence to Route 33 where he attempted to enter two occupied vehicles, police said.

Young was unable to get in the car of 55-year-old Michael Link, of Howell. His second attempt was successful, entering the car of 21-year-old Kevin Bibber, of Freehold, police said.

Young was arrested while in Bibber's car, police said.

Following the accident, Hilsher had to be removed from her car by the Adelphia Fire Company with "moderate injury." She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township, by the Howell First Aid Squad, police said.

None of the other involved in the accident reported injuries, police said.

Hazmat teams from Howell's Southard Fire Department and a county squad were called to contain the spill, police said.
