Fugitive's Wife Says She Did Not Know Of Husband's Past

George Wright's wife says she had no idea

The wife of captured American fugitive George Wright said her husband told her he escaped from a U.S. jail but never revealed he had been convicted of murder or accused of a dramatic airplane hijacking, the Associated Press reported Monday.

-- a WWII veteran, Bronze Star award recipient and father of two -- who was shot and killed during a robbery of what was then the Collingswood Esso gas station in the north end of town. He was arrested in Portugal last week.

Maria do Rosario Valente, Wright's wife, said she was shocked to learn about her husband's past after his capture in Portugal last week after 41 years on the lam. She said she thought the jail escape "was just a boast," according to the AP.
