Jules L. Plangere III Charged With Drunken Driving

Son of longtime, former Asbury Park Press publisher drives car into bushes

The son of the former publisher of the Asbury Park Press was arrested and charged Monday with drunken driving after running his car off the road and into some bushes.

Jules L. Plangere III, 67, of River Road in town, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated around 8:10 p.m. by Patrolman Mike Malone, Sgt. Frank Lancellotti said.

Police responded to a call that a car near the on Route 35 South near Old Bridge Road had left the road and hit some bushes in the lot of the restaurant.

Malone found a disoriented Plangere had lost control of his white BMW 528 and crashed into the shrubery. It was unclear Tuesday in which direction Plangere was headed or if he was alone at the time of the crash, Sgt. Heath Bono said.

Plangere was charged and later released to the custody of a friend, Lancellotti said.

Plangere III is the son of Jules L. Plangeres Jr., longtime publisher of the Asbury Park Press. The elder Plangere also is the namesake of a building at Monmouth University housing the school's communications department.
