Mandatory Evacuations In Some Areas Of Wall Township

People living in trailer parks and low-lying areas are ordered to leave ahead of storm

Wall Township is part of a growing list of Jersey Shore communities under mandatory evacuation orders ahead of Hurricane Irene.

Residents living in some sections of town have been ordered to leave no later than 5 p.m. Saturday, according to Police Chief Robert Brice.

Those areas include:

If residents cannot stay with family or friends, they should go to the Monmouth Boulevard parking lot of Evans Area, near Marconi Road, where shuttle buses will take them to the designated shelter at Wall High School, Brice said.

The Wall High School shelter, which is being run by the Red Cross, will be open at 5:00 p.m., Brice said.

Residents leaving the area should proceed west on Route 138 or north on the Garden State Parkway, Brice said.

Also, police will close some roads because of their propensity to flood. Closures will begin at 7 a.m. Sunday, Brice said.

Brice said additional mandatory evacuations may be ordered as conditions warrant, Brice said.

The Police Department will begin adding additional officers to normal patrols beginning Friday, gradually increasing through the storm, Brice said in an interview.

"We're going to double, if not triple the number of officers per shift from Saturday night through Sunday and we'll extend that beyond if we need to,'' he said. "We’re looking at basically anywhere between 20 to 30 officers a shift.''

The department has eight boats, tractors and other heavy equipment on stand-by. On Saturday night, police will be operating out of each of the firehouses in town, Brice said.

"We're just waiting for it to happen at this point,'' Brice said.

Brice stressed that residents should only call 9-1-1 or (732) 449-4500 except for emergencies because of the high call volume expected.
