UPDATE: Minor Explosion At Allenwood General Store

Cooking accident in back room sends one to hospital, witnesses said

A minor explosion at the Allenwood General Store early afternoon Monday caused minimal damage to the iconic Wall Township mainstay but sent one employee to the hospital.

Someone using a bench grinder to grind a metal bracket ignited an unidentified combustible material near the bench when sparks flew from the bracket, police said.

A flash fire ignighted, burning the victim, whose name was not released by police. The fire was out by the time emergency crews arrived, Sgt. Pete Lokerson said.

The victim was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township, Lokerson said.

An investigation is ongoing, Lokerson said.

The victim was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by Wall Township EMS, his identity is not being released at this time, Lokerson said.

Wall Township Police Department Patrol Division and Detective Division, Wall Township EMS, South Wall Fire Company, Glendola Fire Company, West Belmar Fire Company, Wall Township Fire Prevention, Monmouth County Health Department, Monmouth County Fire Marshalls Office all responded, Lokerson said.
