Monmouth County Jail On Lockdown, Chickenpox To Blame

The Monmouth County jail is on lockdown following two reported chicken pox cases, according to the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.

The lockdown began Sunday after a consultation with the jail's medical team. It will remain until Tuesday, when authorities will assess whether to lift it, according to a Sheriff's Office release.

Sheriff Shaun Golden in the release said authorities were taking every precaution to quell the spread of the virus in the jail, which holds about 1,200 inmates daily.

“Each inmate has been examined and educated about the chickenpox. All of the housing units at the facility continue to be thoroughly disinfected.”

Inmate transports to the have been canceled, with a nod toward video conferencing instead. All programs at the jail have been temporarily suspended, the release says.

Visitation has not been canceled. The jail does not hold visiting hours on Monday or Tuesday, according to the release.
