Monmouth County Jail Went on Lockdown During Hazmat Investigation

Reports of a hazardous materials spill ultimately proved unfounded

The was placed on lockdown Wednesday night as officials responded to reports of a potential hazardous material spill, officials said.

Officials received reports of a HAZMAT spill around 8 p.m., said Cynthia Scott, spokeswoman for the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.

The reports were unfounded, however, Scott said.

“There was not a hazardous situation,” she said. “There were no injuries, no reported illnesses, no one was taken to the hospital.”

As a precaution, the jail temporarily stopped accepting new inmates and went into lockdown, Scott said.

Further details could not be revealed to protect the jail's security, Scott said.
