Motorcyclist Without A Helmet Hits Van Head-on

Wall Township man taken to hospital and charged with drunken driving and other violations

A Township man was taken to the hospital Sunday night after crashing his motorcycle head-on into an oncoming van in the north end of town, police said Monday.

Paul F. Karol, 31, was riding a Honda dirt bike westbound on Belmar Boulevard near Edgemere Road around 9:15 Sunday night when he collided head-on with a 2004 Ford Econoline van traveling eastbound, Sgt. Chad Clark said.

He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by Wall First Aid and MONOC paramedics, Clark said.

Karol's condition was not immediately known Monday.

The motorcycle Karol was riding was not street-legal, did not have a headlight and Karol was intoxicated, Clark said.

The driver of the van was identified by police only as a 36-year-old township resident.

Karol was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and several other motor vehicle violations, Clark said.

The collision was investigated by the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and Sgt. Chad Clark and Patrolman Miles Shanklin.
