Police Respond To Bear Sighting In North Wall

No bear was found despite extensive search, police said

Five police officers were dispatched to the area near the North Wall Little League complex late Wednesday afternoon responding to a reported bear sighting.

Police extensively searched the area around 5:18 p.m. but did not find a bear, which a witness described as standing about 4-feet tall with black fur, Sgt. Steven Wolter said.

Wall Township is considered a bear habitat by the New Jersey Division of Fish & Game and although they are rare, bear encounters are possible, Wolter said.

If you encounter a bear, do not approach it. Most bears will naturally shy away from people, Wolter said. Contact police immediately at (732) 449-4500.

I was there walking my dog 30 minutes before the sighting. I saw nothing and no one was around!

Really Steve. Maybe learn to type and spell before complaining about PD doing their job. The bear is more afraid of you. Geez.

Steve, the police had to be at the scene, not stopping at every house to spread the word. I received a call from the Wall Police by their notification system before 8:00 p.m., with a detailed message, including the fact that black bears are not aggressive and what to do if you encounter one. I presume you are part of the notification and got it yourself. Why would they stop to tell everyone they saw?

could it be the Halloween decorations up at Camp Evans?

Well gee I guess that y'all don't have kids??? Myself I know how to handle a bear but the kids don't! All they had to dovish stop for a second and say keep a eye out black bear in the neighborhood! And yes I did get the call only 4-5 hrs after the incident to place. I'm not belittling the pdbi just. Would have felt more comfortable had he told us when he passed us by!

I guess Steve is above us all and needs notifications in person.

Again they were doing their job...unbelievable! Yes i do have kids! I would be more concerned about strangers in my neighborhood than a black bear. If they felt that there was a real danger than they would have stopped and told you. They're not going to stop and tell every single resident. Sure let's cause a panic!

Steve - I think you are right. They could have stopped since you happened to be outside and in the area where they were looking. Seems a little strange.
And to everyone jumping on Steve: you should be ashamed of yourselves. No matter what, a bear in Wall is a big deal and you know it - even a black bear. You would be concerned too. If the bear was disoriented enough to get here, he may be afraid enough to lash out at people. Everyone should be telling everyone. Period. Steve - pls read your own posts before sending so people can understand what you have to say.

I agree with janej! I didn't get that call I only know becouse my father in law told me. Also its news to me that black bears are common in wall I have lived in wall for 25 years and never saw a black bear or any other color for that matter lol

They live in wall. Had one in my yard just a few years ago. OMG. A deer would charge a human long before a slow moving lazy black bear would even think about moving. LOL! I hope we see more!

Black bears are not dangerous towards humans, they are usually skiddish of people and loud noises. Bears are wonderful creatures and people should not fear them. We have destroyed so much of their natural habitat I am not surprised a black bear found its way into Wall.

Don't do it. The Patch just wants others to do its job. The Patch reporter was moved to the HowellRead More Patch. Wall no longer has a reporter specifically assigned to our town. No longer do we have a reporter attending meetings and reporting on the important news relating to Wall.
