UPDATE: Route 34 Reopened

Point Pleasant woman was trapped in her car following Wednesday accident; state highway at Paynter's Road was closed for more than 2 hours

Crews have completed work on the utility pole downed in a single-car crash Wednesday night that shut both directions of Route 34 and pinned a woman inside her car, police said.

Work on the utility pole finished up Thursday morning and the right lane of southbound Route 34 was reopened around 11 a.m., police said.

A 26-year-old Point Pleasant woman was traveling south on Route 34 around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday when she lost control of her car and struck a utility pole near Paynter's Road. The pole fell on her car and pinned the woman, whom police did not identify, in the car.

Emergency crews could not remove her from the car because of the live electrical wires. Jersey Central Power & Light crews cut power to the lines and emergency personnel from South Wall Fire Rescue extricated the woman from the car, Sgt. Chad Clark said.

She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township, by Wall Community First Aid and MONOC parmedics, Clark said.
