UPDATE: Traffic Fatality Reported On Parkway

51-year-old Ocean woman pronounced dead at the scene

UPDATE 11:06 a.m.: Early this morning a Nissan Sentra, traveling northbound on the Garden State Parkway, ran off the road and struck a tree, killing the driver, a woman from Ocean Township, New Jersey State Police Capt. Frank Davis said.

Maria Proft, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene, Davis said.

No other passengers were in the car, Davis said.

Proft's car ran off the left side of the road near mile marker 94.4 in Wall Township, and struck a tree on the passenger side, Davis said.

The tree cut through the vehicle and struck the driver, Davis said.

Police and emergency units were on the scene until approximately 3 a.m. Friday morning, according to a state Department of Transportation report.
