A truck driver faces charges in a fatal accident that killed a Peekskill, N.Y. man and left Tracy Morgan criticially injured because of an incident that happened in South Jersey in the mid-90s, My9NJ reports.

In 1997, a truck driver who had not slept in more than 30 hours caused an accident that killed Maggie McDonnell, a Sewell resident. He received a $200 fine and a suspended license because there was no law in place, according to the report.

The accident took place in Camden County, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.

Sen. President Stephen Sweeney sponsored a bill that was passed in 2003, calling for anyone who was driving after being awake for more than 24 hours to be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Ga. didn't sleep for 24 hours before the crash that claimed the life of James McNair. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Wednesday.

Not well written for someone who is an "editor"

Maybe the person who wrote this article hasn't slept in 24 hours or more??

It is so terrible what happened to Maggie McDonnell. However because of her tragic death, truck drivers who cause similiar accidents will now face some real serious punishments. Not the joke of a punishment that her killer received. Being sleep deprived is just as dangerous as drunk drinking &/or using drugs while driving. People are impaired & aren't in the right mind set.

AOL sold the Patches not long ago. First thing the new owners did was fire just about everyone. Notice how there is no longer an editor's email above? Nothing is more then a rehashing of other news outlets reports. It even says MY9NJ reports. If you watch or read a real news source you get the same info. I just like reading comments from you guys because you always blame Christie, Obama or some minority or political group. It's very entertaining especially when a couple of you get into battles on here.

One thing to consider is the fact that I'm pretty sure WalMart gave the driver the opportunity for time off between runs. If the driver did something , other than sleep, during that time...whose fault is that?
