UPDATE: When Is This Going Away?

Abandoned boat in Shark River Harbor now collecting graffiti

Friday: The small boat abandoned in the Shark River Harbor just off Belmar Boulevard on Friday appears to have beached itself along the shoreline on the south side of Belmar's Maclearie Park.

Still no word from police or the DOT on when The Spain -- so-named for the graffiti that now graces its hull -- might be plucked from the harbor.

It's an eyesore that's just getting worse.

An abandoned boat, left in the harbor of the Shark River just off Belmar Boulevard, has been riding the tides for months, sometimes on its side, sometimes upright. And now it has attracted the attention of local graffiti artists who have practiced their craft on its hull.

Belmar officials say that the owner has been contacted numerous times, to no avail, and that the state Department of Transportation has been contacted to remove the boat, also with no results.

Belmar police say that they want to be rid of it, but if they remove it, the boat becomes the town's problem. If the DOT removes it, it's theirs.

That's where it stands, and Belmar Police say they will keep pressuring the DOT to collect the boat.
