Allenwood Road Closure To Begin Monday

County to make culvert repairs

Work to repair a failing culvert on Allenwood Road is expected to begin on Monday, closing off the road between Brinley and West Hurley Pond for about two weeks, according to a release from Monmouth County.

The repairs are aimed at stabilizing the eroded west embankment of a culvert over Hurley Pond Brook, near the intersection of Allenwood and West Hurley Pond roads.

Stream bank erosion and road drainage has caused the disrepair of the culvert, according to Joe Ettore, county engineer.

The embankment will be re-established to its original limits with the installation of steel sheet piling. Repairs include reconstruction of an existing storm inlet and a small section of drainage pipe, the release says.

The work will be performed by the county’s on-call maintenance contractor, IEW Construction Group Inc. of Trenton, and the Bridge Division of the Monmouth County Department of Public Works and Engineering, the release says.

For the duration of the repairs, southbound traffic on Allenwood Road will detour to West Hurley Pond Road to State Highway 34 South to State Highway 138 East and return to Allenwood Road. Northbound traffic will detour to State Highway 138 West to State Highway 34 North to West Hurley Pond Road, the release says.

“The county understands the inconvenience these detours will have on motorists and local residents,” John W. Tobia, director of the county’s Department of Public Works and Engineering, said in the release. “Unfortunately, this work cannot be completed without the closure of the road.”
